Cot bumpers....

DS is 4.5 months old and is now able to move/roll 360 degrees. On more than one occasion he has quickly been able to put legs and/or arms through the cot rails. He is in a grobag usually.

My question is, is he old enough now for cot bumpers? I'm worried about him hurting himself when we're asleep.

Try an air wrap. Bumpers are a suffocation risk.

Bumpers are dangerous. I never used them. Mine only got their legs stuck a couple of times and hollered plenty loud enough for me to move them out straight away.

Places like mamas and papas do bumper bar wraps... They are padded pieces that velcro around the bars and are far less n of a suffocation risk.

I didn't like the air wrap ones but these were great

Thanks, I'll have a look at an air wrap.

I saw a documentary a while ago about a couple who were accused of abusing their baby. He had got his legs stuck in rails numerous times and had several leg fractures which had healed up over months! They were eventually acquitted because they caught him doing it on camera.

I'm overthinking this aren't I? I don't want him to suffocate either but this is all new to me.

I don't like the air wraps either. Bumpers are not just a suffocation risk but a strangulation risk. I imagine a baby could still get tangled in the air Wrap

Babies will heal from broken bones, suffocation or strangulation are far more dangerous imo.

Air wraps don't have ties, just very strong Velcro.

Lemondrop99 · 03/09/2017 14:37

Yes but the whole thing is one very long piece of material. If a baby got it off, they could get wrapped in it. I know lots of people use them. Jmo that I'd rather use no bumper at all.

I didn't use any with my first. I won't with my next baby either. Bumpers and other material items (e.g bunting, looks cute but big no no) in or around the cot can cause suffocation/strangulation.

It's much more likely that a baby will be harmed due to cot bumpers than getting limbs trapped between the rails.

I used an air wrap bumper for my second dc as she was constantly waking herself up getting stuck in the bars.

I would doubt a baby could undo the Velcro as it attaches to the outside of the bumper outside the cot bars. It's very strong and runs at the top and bottom of the bumper. You need two hands to undo both at the same time. A little baby wouldn't have the dexterity or reach to get to it.
