I am a student nurse and have been looking after the same 4 patients for the last 3 shifts, with qualified staff countersigning my actions.

Today the auxilliary asked why I hadnt written down a patients insulin pump details since 8am (it was about noon) and I replied that i hadnt done it before and the qualified staff had done it previously. She said 'XX will be in trouble now not you' as if it was my fault.

Now as students we are told not to touch pumps, and for the last 3 shifts the qualified has done the pumps without me even mentioning it. However the one I worked with today says i shouldve told her.

So do I just let it go, she was fine about it and the patient was at no risk. Or shall I speak to someone so that everyone knows in future that students do not do pumps.

I wish i had dealt with it more assertively but I just felt so awful that I missed one aspect of paperwork

It doesn't sound like your fault at all. If the other nurse expected you to do it then she should of made sure that you knew that.

Can you check with a higher member of staff as to wether you should be doing this or not ?

from what i can gather it is not your fault at all mosschops

they cant expect you to do all the paperwork and all their business if you are not asked to do it

i would just ask what your duties are and stick to them
dont deviate from your duties
good luck

i am finishing there on thursday but i think that people need to know for future students what is expected and whats not.

Ive done lots as a student, but we're told to not do IV's or pumps

We have also been catagorically (sp?) told that we are not to go anywhere near an IV.

As Giraffski says, the auxillary most probably does not know the ins snd outs of the NMC guidlines.

HAve you considered contacting RCN for some advice? I had to phone them two weeks ago about something and found them really helpful.

I would discuss it with my mentor also before the end of my placement- they may make it more clearer to all staff on the wards what you can and cannot do as a student.

FWIW I could work as an NA, with my NVQ2, and i don't know knob about what people are and are not allowed to do, and why, so IMO don't take a blind bit of notice of her, because she probably doesn't know knob either.
