Baby rolling onto side at night

Last night I woke up to find my 16 week old had rolled onto his side whilst sleeping. Every bit of guidance I can find says that when a baby can roll from front to back and vice versa it's fine to leave them in whatever position they want. Well he can't. He can roll onto his side and that's it. He hates tummy time and though he can lift his head right up when on his tummy will invariable bury it in the playmat after a couple of trues and start to cry.

So, do I need to keep turning him onto his back? How am I going to do that all night?! I'm terrified he'll roll onto his stomach and not be strong enough to roll back or keep his head lifted up.

Both of mine did this from a younger age and I would keep checking to start with but soon realised they were fine. As long as he doesn't have a pillow and a pretty firm little mattress he'll be fine.

This was me a few months back. I know it's an anxious thing but honestly, every single baby does it without coming to harm. I promise.

Thanks both. No pillows at all - he's in a Chicco Next 2 Me that has a firm flat mattress. Think I'm even more on edge because he has his vaccinations today and has been a little feverish and upset.

My baby's been doing this near enough from birth! HV said as long as I'm putting her down on her back it's fine.

I had the exact same thing with my little boy! I used to place him down on his back and I'd find him shortly after on his side and pretty much on his front! It scared the hell out of me for a start, I'd turn him over each time I saw him on the monitor on his side or front. Only to find he had flipped himself back over when I'd got back downstairs. In the end I left him to it and he was fine, months down the line (10 months now) he sleeps on his front pretty much. Very normal, try not to worry xx
