Entertaining a baby

Hi everyone

My DD is nearly 5 weeks old, she struggles to settle at night and spends a lot of time wriggling around etc, she does sleep quite a bit in the day, she tends to wake, change and then feed sometime she will be awake for a little longer but more often than not she falls straight back to sleep, should I be reducing her sleeps through the day to help her sleep and settle at night? Any tips on routine etc?

Any tips on things to do and toys etc to stimulate and entertain her? We do lots of singing talking and faces currently Smile

Thank you! Xx

No she's still so small. They is supposed to sleep loads in the day and feed every 3-4 hours during the night too.

Reducing sleep in the day will make nights worse...
DS now 9 wks. Still bf every 2 hours night or day although we've had the odd 3 hour nap and went 4 hours a feed the other night (sadly DH assures me that he was wide awake wanting to play for at least an hour though!)

Sleep begets sleep at this age. Over tiredness is a nightmare for over night sleep! At 5 weeks babies mainly just eat and sleep and a proper routine is probably a long way off yet.

Babies are still a bit nocturnal at 5 weeks. But from memory, 6 weeks was a bit of a turning point and they gradually started to sleep a bit more at night.

They don't need entertainment as such. That's the beauty of that age! You get to go the places you want, and they think it's all fabulous. So, take advantage of baby friendly cinema, museums, coffee out...

I agree with Scotinoz - do things that interest you because baby will enjoy any activity.

My baby is 15 weeks and loves any days that involve seeing my friends, going out shopping, in the car, on the train. We've even been to a concert. She's an outrageous flirt and seems happiest when we're out and about seeing people. She gets grumbly if we stay at home all day!

I agree with the others. At 5 weeks neither of mine slept much at night. As for entertainment- do what pleases you. I did baby groups from about 3 weeks with both just to see others (library singing group and coffee morning). We went for walks, watched a lot of House and XFiles and stuff.
