Could it be silent reflux?

DD2 is 10 weeks old. We have an appointment next week for a tongue tie assessment and I've also cut diary out of my diet due to DDs general demeanour and feeding behaviour.

But, I've just realised that it could be reflux causing all her fussiness rather than the above. The behaviour I'm talking about is :

  • Fussiness during feeds (bf), pushing away, gagging/choking, arching back etc
  • excessive mucousy drool
  • very windy
  • sudden and intense crying
  • constant congestion
  • she likes to sit up on my knees and I notice she often makes faces like she's got a bad taste in her mouth
  • only cat naps during the day - wakes up AS SOON as she's put down after falling asleep (usually during a feed). Although, doesn't wake up upset instantly.

Does this sound like it could be silent reflux? She's not a sicky baby at all, and is generally content and smiley in between these symptoms. She also sleeps ok at night, usually only waking twice for a feed (although we do have some nights worse than others)

It could well be. I partly solved my ds' silent reflux by holding him upright for 30 minutes after every feed. He also slept, and had nappy changes all inclined slightly. It was difficult, especially during the night but it helped him immensely.

I always hold her upright for a good while after feeds in the evening and during the night, and I wonder if that's what helps her sleep well.

It's difficult during the day as Inan e DD1 who is young and understandably gets a bit sensitive when I'm constantly holding the baby

Mine had this. It was awful as we exhausted the usual Gaviscon Riditon? etc
I researched and suggested a milk thickener to our consultant and it was like a magic wand. It was added to bottles and made a thick shake that he actually kept down and did not writhe in agony.

Mine had this and was diagnosed with reflux. We were on zantac for a while but made him super constipated and we had to stop zantac and started babies magic tea which helped with his reflux and gassiness that was bothering him. As well as the constipation problem solved.

My first DS had silent reflux.

He would just scream and scream for hours and would only start to settle when at the breast but within a few minutes of feeding he's be arching, pushing away from me and screaming again.

He was started on Ranitidine at 8 weeks and saw a difference very quickly. Coincidentally he also had a tongue tie but it was very minor and didn't require treatment.

When you say 'very windy', do you mean burps easily and a lot? Because that's a good thing, not a bad thing.

If you have a baby who doesn't burp very easily, then the symptoms you mention could all be trapped wind. If baby is very 'trumpy' (all babies trump a bit, but if excessively), this would equally suggest wind isn't being bought up well enough and so the trapped air can cause (sometimes significant) pain until it makes it's way out.

She brings up wind Ok after a feed during the day - but she's still left with loads of air in her guts which comes out the other end in huge amounts!! It was very smelly too until I cut out dairy. Her latch is poor which doesn't help with wind

We have the exact same symptoms here Sleep, apart from we do have the vomiting. Went to doc and he said colic as well as reflux?! I keep baby upright after her feeds in a bouncy chair or we incline her on a wedge in her cot and the sleep nest on top. If it's daytime I just keep her on my knee. She also doesn't latch well so I'm hoping to see breastfeeding counsellor. We have been using Colief drops but now trying Dentinox. (Only a few quid from Boots).

Tongue tie found and snipped so we'll see if this helps the reflux symptoms
