how many school uniforms do you buy?

Hello

Last year when dc2 started reception I decided to buy extra sets of uniform so that I didn't have to iron mid week. I've done the same this year, uniform still has labels on and I'm thinking of returning some and just keeping 2 sets. So I'll need to wash and iron mid week but I'll save some money which I could use to buy a new set mid year when they grow out of it rather than stretching out the uniform for the full year. What do you do?

I will be buying one set for every day. Dss in high school but manages to get covered in mud somehow and with a baby on the way it means i will only have to do one uniform load at the end of the week

niknac1 · 25/08/2017 12:49

I buy three of everything apart from pe kit which I buy one and tights where I buy five pairs as they get holes. That's on on one in the wash and a spare one. I don't iron but buy things that can be tumble dried (apart from tights). Hope that helps.

I just buy one set, with additional shirts.

I buy 5 shirts, 3 jumpers and 3 pairs of trousers for DS. Shirts and jumpers are changed daily (sweaty teen) and try to make trousers last 2 days.

Bobbins43 · 25/08/2017 12:59

One set for every day!

babybigapple · 25/08/2017 13:00

Ironing? Confused

Huffletuff · 25/08/2017 13:02

5 jumpers, 5 pairs of trousers, 10 plain polos and 2 with logos for trips. 2 PE tops and joggers. That means I have one set for each day, plus 2 weeks worth of polo shirts which is easier when it comes to washing and ironing.

Notreallyarsed · 25/08/2017 13:04

6 of everything for the 2 in nursery (one spare set goes in their bags), and 5 of everything for DS1. That way it all gets ironed and hung in the wardrobe on Sunday and I don't need to faff at any point during the week.

AgadorSpartacus · 25/08/2017 13:06

For DD (yr5)
3 Cardigans
4 skirts
5 polo shirts

She gets away with 2 days out of a skirt/cardi mostly, not always but fresh shirt every day.

DS (yr11)

3 trousers
3 jumpers
5 shirts

Fresh shirt and jumper everyday.
Sometimes get away with trousers 2 days. Only occasionally mind.

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 25/08/2017 13:08

White polo shirt for everyday because it obviously shows all the dirt / paint & this way I only have to do 1 whites wash a week.
4 trousers - they came in packs of 2 so it was 2 or 4

Alanna1 · 25/08/2017 13:10

A basic set per day as I only do laundry once a week. So 5 polo shirts. I like to pretend there's an illusion of choice, so in total I have 2 skirts, 2 dresses/pinafores, 1 pair of trousers, 1 jumper, 1 cardigan. 4 light gingham summer dresses (which are very cheap).

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 25/08/2017 13:16

At that age we had five or six polo shirts (depending on whether they were packaged in 2 or 3), 2-3 trousers, 2-3 jumpers. New polo shirts don't need ironing if you hang them properly while damp. We ironed the shirts as they got older but not while new.

DeathMetalMum · 25/08/2017 13:17

We tend to have one set for each day and then a few extra polo shirts. In reception definitely but once they start to move up its possible to have a few less think we have 4 cardigans for dd in year 2 one of which is one that's sweatshirt material with the school logo, it's worth it as they sponge down really well so can be worn a few times.

littleoctonauts · 25/08/2017 13:19

Wow, a week's worth of uniform seems to be a clear winner! Thank you.

it definitely was easier not having to wash uniform mid week but then the ironing on the weekend was a headache. I do have to iron because both dcs have to have pure cotton uniform due to eczema, and the cotton ones aren't non iron.

Two of everything, and don't iron.

ElizabethShaw · 25/08/2017 13:22

You iron school uniform?

Mine both have 2 pairs of trousers, 2 shorts, 3 polo shirts and 2 sweatshirts.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/08/2017 13:29

I've never bought a weeks worth of uniform and my two are now 17 and 16.

Polo shirts/shirts changed daily, 2 or 3 pairs of trousers to last the week, though now one pair usually lasts all week!

When they had sweatshirts they had 2 or 3 - probably just 5 between them as they wore the same size.

Now they don't were jumpers etc, just their blazers and they have one each and 3 ties between two.

Notreallyarsed · 25/08/2017 13:35

I'm genuinely curious, because our uniforms would look all creased and crunched up if I didn't iron them, where do you get uniforms you can get away with not ironing???

Notreally whilst I'm sure there are some materials that are less likely to need ironed (usually the more artificial ones), I think it's a matter of cotton comtent and standards :) It also varies depended on how they are washed, dried and folded. It's possible to get some materials perfectly neat and flat with good handling.

But not everyone cares as long as uniform is clean and warm.

I like a nice ironed uniform as I feel that my own clothes feel better and nicer on my skin after they've been ironed. Line dried and folded or tumbled and folded doesn't work for me but it's a personal choice at the end of the day.

Notreallyarsed · 25/08/2017 13:52

Thanks, it's probably the way I dry them! I like them ironed, that's just my preference, but I'm always curious as to how people manage to make them look smart without ironing!

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/08/2017 13:55

Taking them straight out of the machine and either hanging them on hangers and drying them like that or briefly tumble drying gets a decent result on non-iron shirts. The blazers get straight on hangers from wash too and just dry like that. I think leaving anything lying for a while crushed means that you'll probably need to iron. Swift action and polyester are your non ironing friends I think.

DH does our ironing anyway and seems happy to continue.

SnowiestMountain · 25/08/2017 14:02

3 of everything big we wash a lot in our house and they have a full clean set every day

ElizabethShaw · 25/08/2017 14:07

What do you iron? Surely school sweatshirts never crease.

Polo shirts and trousers - just don't tumble dry them til they're crisp, shake and hang up.

cheminotte · 25/08/2017 14:12

I had 3 of each and washing every Tuesday for a long time mostly because of lack of storage space. Now more space and have 5 of most.
