Sunscreen in April?

What time of year would most people start putting sunscreen on their lo - I know it's only end of march, but wondering if an 8 month old baby might need it soon if out in buggy for a couple of hours for eg. What do you think? Am I being paranoid?

okay, I guess I was being paranoid then

Generally I prob wouldn't before mid-May

But I'm not sure why - I guess I feel that the sun wouldn't be high enough in the sky for the UVA/B to penetrate the cloud/atmpsphere......but that could be a load of cr*p

Is the baby very blonde or a red head?

I could be wrong - why not ask your HV or practise Nurse?

bunnypeculiar · 30/03/2007 22:32

I do - on a 'hey won't hurt them' policy

thePA · 30/03/2007 22:33

or just use a moisturiser with spf anyway?

skibump · 30/03/2007 22:34

Just heard a dermatologist on the radio saying everyone should were a sun protection cream every day of the year (not sure about the impact on vit D levels...!)

thePA · 30/03/2007 22:35

i use a moisturiser with spf every day, all year, but then i'm very fair and burn in minutes!

chocolateface · 30/03/2007 22:43

My Dh can burn in March if he's out for a couple of hours. I once looked after a little blond boy who's neck burned when we were in the park one Sunday afternoon in March.I won't put it on my own DC untill May though.

I put cream on my kids on bright/sunny days even in the spring months. They are fair and burn easily.

midnightexpress · 31/03/2007 11:48

Yep, me too, but DS1 is a redhead with fair skin.

deaconblue · 31/03/2007 13:55

Have just bought a new sunhat for ds coz of recent sunny weather. I think a decent sunhat should prob be enough at the moment

noseynora · 01/04/2007 11:59

thanks everyone, think I'll get her a sunhat. Does seem a bit extreme putting on suncream in April, but the sun seems surprisingly strong for the time of year. I suppose midsummer is only 3 months away.
