Here are a few good reasons why I should quit my OU course

  1. It's hard, its so much harder than I thought it would be. I have 90 points at level one and this is my first level two course. It's Introducing religions. I have a glossary of foreign terms about the size of a copy of Good Housekeeping and as each TMA is on a different religion it's learning completely new stuff every 5 weeks and not falling back on anything that I already know.
  1. Time. I work 5 days a week and am out of the house from 8.30 to 3.45, this doesn't leave a lot of time, I have three children, 18 (learning to drive and wanting to go out for practice), 13, plays football, needs help with homework etc and 10 and an 80 year old mother. I am constantly struggling to fit it in. And because it's hard it's taking so much longer for it to sink in.
  1. Money. It costs £70 a month and that is a lot of money to me - looking round Primark at lunchtime and considering saving up for some new shoes (!!)
  1. Dh - he is completely behind me in doing this amd is very supportive and generally wonderful, but he is studying too and his exams are paid for by work and will end up in him gettign a better job. Mine wont'. Feel that I should be supporting him more in his.

Next Tma due on the 25th April and I've done hardly anythign as I have been busy with life, I could cry when I think of the amount of reading and notetaking that I have to do to get ready for it. It only seem sto take one weekend of not studying to make me fall behind.

What do you think?

Oh and actually studying with the OU will improve your career prospects! Future employers will be impressed with your dedication because getting an OU degree is harder than getting one when you're a yoof and go from school/gap year!

MarsLady · 30/03/2007 17:02

Time to trust 10yo in kitchen imvho!

Tell you what.... we'll strike a deal.....

I'll write my TMA this weekend (and possibly...gulp....forgo salsa on Saturday) if youu promise not to give up on this course and your dream!

Deal?

The eldest is a dd, I do feel a bit sorry for her sometimes as at the moment she never has a day off, she does 4 days a week in college and the other three and one evening working to pay for her 18 year old life style lifestyle and her car. (sighs - remember it well!!)

80 yo mother doesn't live with us thankfully!

Becky at your marks

I am a pretty lazy mare at home most of the time - dh does loads and an awful lot gets left!

Well don't feel sorry for her too much! Besides... cooking isn't going to take too long is it? And as for helping her gorgeous younger brother..... that's not too bad!

beckybrastraps · 30/03/2007 17:06

I'm telling you - only what is needed for the TMA. I am 4 chapters behind already, and it is only March...

Molesworth · 30/03/2007 17:10

blimey at your marks too bbs

what course(s) are you doing?

PollyLogos · 30/03/2007 17:11

Lilibet it is hard work isn't it with work kids house etc but don't give up just yet. FWIW I do a bit each morning -I get up at 5.30 to do an hour every day and on sundays I cook the lunch and nothing else - somehow I manage to stumble along!

Do you enjoy the course you are doing this year? I absolutely LOVE what I am doing this year and it has been a lot easier to keep up with the timetable because I am enjoying it so much.

If you do withdraw be aware that you will still have to pay this years fees and then you will get a percentage off the next course you do (has to be within 18 months) I only mention this because I withdrew from a course last year due to financial problems and then still had to pay for the course. Sort of defeated the opbject!

Good luck

beckybrastraps · 30/03/2007 17:19

OK, now I'm . ANd obviously will fail the next TMA due to hubris...

I'm doing psychology. My first level 3 this year (DD303). It is v. boring so far...
I've loved the last three courses.

Molesworth · 30/03/2007 17:22

lol @ hubris

well done is all I can say!

I get good marks but I absolutely have to bust a gut (do extra reading etc) to get them - I just wouldn't be able to get my head around this stuff if I didn't!

Yeah but fio at brick unis 75%+ is a grade A pass, but at the OU it's 85%+ - so 68% is actually blody good in anyone's language

Molesworth · 30/03/2007 17:38

and your husband is a big swot

VeniVidiVickiQV · 30/03/2007 17:40

lilibet - did you get a CAT from me the other week?

MarsLady · 30/03/2007 17:41

I'm guessing your DH doesn't get as distracted by the family needs as much as you do! lol

God, I only study at night. Most of my TMAs are finished in the early hours.

DH is the opposite. He will get up early to finish work, whereas I don't go to bed until it is finished.

We are incomptible study-wise.

But we don't fight over the computer...

I need pressure to get things done.

Studying at night makes me think "bugger, the children will be getting up in 5 hours, need to get done and get to sleep". Without that looming over me, I fritter away my time.

I am very bad at self-discipline

Molesworth · 30/03/2007 18:08

lol fio

it's where I'm going wrong too, honest!

will try doing some tonight and see what happens ...

lilibet · 30/03/2007 18:14

VVV - sorry my cats go to an old e mail address, just had a look and it's a very strange coincidnce - I was at work today and did a search on her name on here to see if anyone had heard anything and saw the recent thread about her. No, he hasn't heard from her, he did try and get in touch as she had some of his stuff but I think he is just letting it go, he was really hurt over that as he had fallen for her in a big way.

And on the same person, dh was off work a few weeks ago and was listening to Jeremy Vine when there was a caller with her name and dh said it sounded just like her who rang in to the money expert. This caller was totaly broke and pregnant!!

Sorry for the hijack - just off to get some work done!!

Oh your poor friend.

Unfortunately, after everything - I'm not surprised.
