"Significant" first born gift ideas

We're expecting our first baby in February, and it's the first great-grandchild for my grandmother. She wants to give us a "useful" gift "which can be used for future great-grandchildren as well!". I'm not entirely clear whether she is anticipating more children down the line from us or for it to be passed around my various cousins as and when they have their own children.

Her suggestion was a cot, but she said that she doesn't have much imagination and thinks that we could come up with better ideas. It needs to be something useful and nice and, I guess, fairly robust so that it can be passed down.

It's lovely of her, but I have absolutely no ideas except for a cot! Does anyone have any suggestions of types of things that would be suitable? Thanks!

Bedside crib that you can for first six months whilst the baby is in with you. I realise this is essentially still a cot, but have you seen end the price of them!?!

Money box, try and think of things that can be easily stored and won't take much damage through the years.

For newbor I would recommend any of the following: moses basket or swinging chair - maybe some good one that swings itself or some mobile this will chear LO the most in early months. Alternatively a car seat/pushchair. It really depends how much you want granny to spend on the LO.

Thanks! This is really helpful. I'm not sure of her budget so I'll make a few suggestions and see what she prefers. I have a feeling that the bedside crib will catch her fancy, as it's close to a cot but a bit more of a "modern" concept - not sure she'll have come across them before :)

Sleepyhead plus a couple of spare covers. Better than a bedside crib IMO as it fits in bed with you.

Or a really good sling eg Beco Gemini, Ergo, etx

Something like this wooden gliding crib would be lovely. If it is intended to be used by cousins this would be ideal as you have a 6 month life span of individual use, whereas with a cot the baby might be in it for 2/3 years. I don't know how many cousins you have, or the age span of your wider family, but on my mum's side my grandparents have had 7 great grandchildren in as many years!

I'd never heard of a Sleepyhead! There's just so many options out there, how does anyone ever choose?

Thanks ohidoliketobe that's a very good point about the lifespan. I have 12 cousins and you never know!

It's not something that can be used immediately but what about a nice solid wood rocking horse?

MarmiteAndPB · 22/08/2017 10:34

Ooh, that's a sweet idea. I'm not sure it could be as easily passed to cousins etc, but if she was thinking just within our family unit it would work. If we have the space! Grin
