Should I change milk?

My daughter is 14 weeks old and suffers really bad from reflux. I have her on aptamil comfort milk and carobel thickener. The last week she has developed diarrhoea. The comfort milk is supposed to help with constipation so I wasn't sure if it's this that's caused it. I always find the gp, no matter who I see isn't that helpful with her, it's like they don't really know what they're doing. I wasn't sure wether to wean her over to the normal infant milk, although it has more lactose in it so could cause problems. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Have you tried the anti reflux milk? Carobel and comfort milk might be a bit too thick?

Firefly112 · 13/08/2017 20:50

Yeah I've tried aptamil anti reflux but you have to wait seven minutes for it to thicken and when she's hungry she screams and cries so loud that even waiting 3 minutes for the carobel is like a lifetime, for my own sanity and less stress for her I don't think I could wait seven minutes. She doesn't have a real feeding routine either, she'll have a bottle anytime from every 2-5 hours, it differs all the time so I can't even make it in advance.

She's been on the comfort milk and thickener for a while and is getting on ok with it. Anything less and she just projectile vomits everything back up within 10 seconds.

We are exactly the same with our little boy, we never know when he's going to want another bottle. We've found boiling water, than once it's cool put it in a bottle in the fridge. Than top it up with boiling water when you need to make a bottle. Means it still reaches over 80 degrees for the milk but obviously cools down alot quicker.

We also have tried all the milk and medicine varieties for reflux and colic. The best combo we have found is colic milk with gaviscon. Ranitidine I'd he's having a really bad day

Sending you Flowers it's really tough. Just as well they are cute Hey?!

This sounds so similar to my little boy, we realised he's lactose intolerant so moved him on to cow and gate lactose free but kept up gus gaviscon as he has done reflux but not as bad as we originally thought - half the prob was his lactose intolerance. He was a different baby within 24hours, all smiles and giggles, we'd never seen them before because he was in so much pain. I hope this helps? Xx

Oh and fennel tea is amazing for babies digestion plus it seems to aid sleep. Maybe try that xx

Stargirl82 · 13/08/2017 23:16

Sounds like my child too xmax different child within 24 hours after cow and gate lactose free. And the best part is they do grow out of it! He's nearly 5 now, but by about 2.5 there was no need to have lactose free anything food or milk and we seamed him off it and was right as rain!

I've just read my post . So many spelling mistakes ha..I was up doing the night feed is gone to bed by 9 🙄 anyway , yeh it's definitely worth trying it - it absolutely does them no harm to try lactose free and if the symptoms are still there after a week you know it's not that he's lactose intolerant and can move him but ... but if he is, you won't believe the change. I couldn't believe the difference xd

Firefly112 · 14/08/2017 08:42

I've got the fennel tea, she just won't drink it! The doctors tried her on a lactose free prescription milk before and it made no difference what so ever, in fact it made her slightly worse. I feel really stuck. She's passing like water now, is really sickly and is just really unsettled and crying. I'll have to ring the doctors and just hope they can help somehow.

What about have they changed her off cows milk?? What are all her symptoms again sorry?poor little thing, and you. It's a horrible horrible feeling what your having to deal with right now xx

Xmaxsmumx · 14/08/2017 10:27

Have they given you infant gaviscon? That will definitely stop her diarrhoea!! It's actually known to bung them up a bit but I just give mine lactulose and fennel tea , plus his cycling movements and eventually get something out of him. But the gaviscon is quite good for reflux if it's used correctly, I didn't realise naively that it had to be all taken in, I was giving it to him in his bottle which sometimes he would or wouldn't finish. He was still being sick a bit and suffering with acid but I started splitting it into 2 bottles and making sure he took the full bottle of gaviscon and then moving on to the rest xx

Lactose intolerance is very rare in babies (as human milk is full of lactose) - if its a milk problem its more likely to be cows milk intolerance, which is fairly common.

The SMA anti reflux milk doesn't need to stand, it's made like normal milk. What about changing brands?
