Gripe water

Hi,

My baby is currently just over 2 weeks old, around the same time every evening she screams uncontrollably which is unlike her as through the night and during day she never cries and is very content (just mumbles etc when due a feed) she is totally breastfed other than evening formula (after she has settled from screaming) I have been using infacol to help her poo and get wind up but someone recommended gripe water can I give this to a newborn? And had anyone else used this?

Thanks!

You probably can, but it's pretty useless.

It used to contain alcohol, which is why it sent children to sleep years ago.

If there's nothing medically wrong with the baby, maybe they are just over tired. Some babies seem to panic in the face of sleep.

I wouldn't give a young baby anything other than milk (medicines aside).

I have a nearly 3 week old who doesn't like evenings, seems very windy and cluster feeding taking in lots of air - DH brought some gripe water home last week but it says not to be used under 1 month.

I can remember it not working on dd though...

I think gripe water is from one month onwards (if I remember correctly).

I actually found it quite effective when my children had trapped wind. Lucky, neither got colic, just the occasional trapped wind so I can't comment on it for regular use.

When you say she needs infacol to help her poo, does she have constipation?

Bmarie · 12/08/2017 20:45

Thank you all

@EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic I think so, she was at one point not pooping all day and then at 6pm onwards having multiple and was screaming at 9/10pm, she has been pooping more through the day now so I thought it would ease in the evening but it hasn't, it seems to be the same time every evening and I think a combination of trapped wind and constipation as she usually does a big burp and poo and then will settle..

I have signed up for the baby massage classes so I'm hoping there is something I can learn there to help her get it up x

Constipation is unusual but not rare. Does she have any other syptoms? Does her tummy swell? Is there mucus in her poo?

DeadSpace · 12/08/2017 21:44

I'd have her checked for Reflux and cows milk protein intolerance - even if you're breastfeeding!

Intransige · 12/08/2017 21:45

It sounds like purple crying.

Have you tried calmer, less stimulating days? And when she starts crying try feeding her in a quiet dark familiar room?

Firefly112 · 12/08/2017 22:19

The uncontrollable crying every evening sounds like she has colic. My daughter did exactly the same and to be honest I found that nothing really worked for it (I even asked a paediatrician) she just kind of grew out of it which I know isn't helping you right now. You can't use gripe water until she's 1 month old but again I didn't find it worked that well but all babies are different. My friends baby suffered from colic and when she cried she used to sit her in the bath and that really settled her, you could always try that? With constipation you could try a tiny bit of cooled boiled water, a nice gentle tummy massage or lie her on her back and gently move her legs like she's riding a bike.
Hope some of that helps!

@EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic no nothing else just the not going, she is definitely inconsistent with it as some days she will poo throughout and then others just not at all but the screaming is always the same until she poos and burps in the evening, hopefully we get some tips at baby massage etc to try and help her, currently trying regular burping throughout her feeds so it doesn't build up

Thanks all I'll try her with these! I think I have had a look at a few massage and burping techniques online and think I may try a massage early evening when she's settled and see how we get on... the bath sounds fab and like it could ease it except she hates being naked & bath time at the moment, I'm hoping once my bleeding slows I can get in with her and have skin to skin to make it more enjoyable for her!

Thanks again for your advise everyone I really appreciate it ❤️❤️

Many breastfed babies cluster feed at night. They will want to be constantly on the breast for up to a few hours a night. Just let her be on the breast every time she's upset, it'll make your life a lot easier trust me!!

We used baby's magic tea for our daughter while she had colic and reflux and had great success with it. I would say that after only 24 hours she showed marked improvement and was much happier.

needsomesunshineandwine · 13/08/2017 19:18

Gripe water was a god send for us. Got it stocked for baby no.3.

Firefly112 · 13/08/2017 20:52

Can I ask what magic tea is? I have a herbal tea for my baby which is aniseed flavoured but she doesn't seem to like it (I'm not surprised)
