Can someone help me with the new car seat laws.

Have seen a lot of different advice.

What age by law do babies go into a forward facing car seat?

You can keep them rearward for as long as you like but I'm pretty sure you can't turn them forward til 9months.

SayNoToCarrots · 07/08/2017 19:12

Actually a swift Google says 15 months

I was under the impression that the law had changed, and they had to be rear facing until 15 months. So confusing. Thanks for replying.

Rear facing for longer is much safer, and the cost of rear facing car seats for children up to age 4 has come right down - they used to be very expensive but Argos now sell one for about £65, seat belt fitting not isofix though.

I've purchased the ERF britax dualfix seat as I prefer rear facing.

The advice was actually for my friend, she's just put her baby in a forward facing seat, I just let her know about what I read online with the new laws, and she's not very happy with me. Just wanted to verify I was correct with what I was saying to her.

Thanks so much for all the replies.

Is that right? This says 15 months for height based seats but can be rear or forward facing if the baby is over 9kg if it's a weight based seat: www.gov.uk/child-car-seats-the-rules/using-a-child-car-seat-or-booster-seat

I've no idea @Lules I find it all really confusing now. Thankyou though.

Isize seats are height based and it's rear facing until 15 months, weight based it's 9kg for forward facing and they must be able to support their head for atleast 30min.
Thats what I read when i was shopping for ds's car seat.

Eeeeek2 · 08/08/2017 12:43

If you already have a seat under the old regulations you can forward face at 9kg, the new I-size seat says 15 months. So it depends on when she bought the seat.

But rear facing is much safer so as long as possible rear facing the better. I have an extended rear facing seat that will last until 25kg because I have a tall boy and didn't want him running out of hight in an 18kg rear facing seat. It should last him until 5/6 years old

There ate still 2 different types of seats. The weight based ones do have options of forward facing frim 9kg. The new iSize seats are age based and should rear face until 15 months old. Both types of seats are perfectly legal and the regulations will run side by side for quite a while yet as not all cars will be compatible with the iSize seats
