dreadful nappy rash - urgent advice needed

Hi,
Would really appreciate some advice.
My 2yr old ds has got awful nappy rash (the first time in his life!) Nappy changes are agony for him and me, he is screaming so much when I wipe him and because he has had the runs for the last day or two I am having to wipe him fairly often. I know that they advice you to leave the nappy off but my strong-willed son is having none of it, and wants his nappy back on (and obviously with the squits I would rather he kept it on!)
I am using sudo-crem, and I guess it will clear up with time but has anyone any tips for making nappy changes more comfortable for him? Have tried washing his bottom in the sink in luke warm water but again he is having none of it!
Any tried and tested tips gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi karma sorry to hear your little man has nappy rash; is he ill or is it teething related? My DS (23 Months) suffers terribly when he is teething he gets the runs too which makes the nappy rash even worse!

I would definately ditch the wipes until it clears up luke warm water is good. I always stand him in the bath and use the showerhead if you don't have a shower could use a jug and your hand he probably doesn't like you wiping it with a cloth/wipe etc so the water and your hand is best i'm afraid!

you could try putting cooled camomile tea on his bum(for its soothing properties)

and apparently putting egg white on the bum is good for nappy rash - i have tried this once and it didn't do much for us.

As for sudo cream it works more as a barrier cream - so it is a preventative rather than a cure

creams that I have tried are metanium, bepanthen ointment, kamillosan ointment (the last 2 i found worked well)

If it is that bad then i would take him to the drs and get something on prescription - I have done this twice when it was so bad it bled and blistered!! the cream he was prescribed started to work instantly - can't remember the name will have a think and get back to you

Hope it clears up soon

if i'ts really bad and infected,,he may need antibiotics to clear it up.Mine has got like this b4,I hate him needlessly having antibiotics but they did clear it up

RanToTheHills · 28/03/2007 19:11

oh and use nothing on the area but water & cotton wool. No wipes or creams.

Thanks for the advice ladies.
Yes have got a bit of bepanthen cream so will give that a go. I agree that washing with water seems to be the way to go - will try the jug and hand method. Have been using a few wipes but will definitely now stick to cotton wool if needed.
You've also reassured me that it is alright to go to the doctor if needed.
Thanks again.

Metanium is great and deffo no wipes. Mine really suffered and were on canesten for thrush one time and had to have antibiotics another time . All teething related here. Breaks your heart doesn't it. Good old fashioned air is the best thing really. This helps unbelievably.

DS1 gets this with some certain antibiotics he gets a sore bum to the point where he can't walk or sit down properly and it bleeds poor thing!
Our Dr gives up Dactarin cream which starts clearing it up with 1 application so if your LO doesn't start healing soon i would pop to the g.p as it may be a fungal infection or something.

i'd look at his diet as well and see if you've introduced any new foods recently. ds (15 months) went through a stage of awful nappy rash, bleeding bottom and everything. as far as i can tell, it was feeding him oranges that did it. the rash started when i introduced clementines to his diet, which he loved and would have eaten until they came out of his ears. it took me a while to realise that they were the likely cause of the problem. by stopping them and then reintroducing them to see if the rash returned (it did) i'm convinced they are the cause. he is off them now and his bottom is wonderful!

I wouldn't wipe at all.
It will be sooooo painful.
Just sit in warm water when a change needed and swish with your hands and allow to dry naturally after a very gentle blot with a soft towel.

TIMODINE - I knew it would come to me

After a nasty tummy bug, Drapolene worked wonders on DS' bistery, raw nappy rash. My HV recommended it. You can buy it at the chemist.

My friend's husband is a consutant paediatrician and won't let his own child have Sudocream put on beause of how harsh it is. They don't use it at our hospital, they use Bepanthen. I just found Drapolene better for bad rash.

nappyneeds · 29/03/2007 00:45

I second Drapoline. I use it if dd starts to get a bit of redness. Sudocream is more of a barrier cream i think. Diet could be a factor too. Acidic foods/drinks dont go down well on the bottom sometimes.

When it does clear up you could try washable wipes with a top n tail bowl and water. Would save £££'s too
