My SIL wants my 11month olds birth certificate????

My SIL has said she wants my 11 month olds birth certificate so she can get something for her 1st birthday. I find this odd. She said she wants it to be a surprise. I don't want to be a spoil sport, but she's a bit odd (and she really doesn't like me or my DH - jealousy issues from childhood i think) and I'm worried she might do something weird.
What might she need her birth certificate for? she said she will only need it for a day

Give her a photocopy

OutToGetYou · 06/08/2017 00:25

Give her a photocopy? Or just refuse. Say you've only got the one original and don't want it out of the house as can't risk losing it.

Give her a photocopy.

I would pretend I couldn't find it and tell your Dh the same

elephantoverthehill · 06/08/2017 00:27

Whoops, sorry that almost turned into cancel the cheque. It is down to my slow typing.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 06/08/2017 00:28

I expect she wants to open a savings account for your child. A photocopy won't do for that.

You do know anyone can order anyone else's birth certificate for a small fee don't you?

what weird thing do you think she might do? Frame it?

yamadori · 06/08/2017 00:29

Do banks need to see a birth certificate if you want to open a savings account for a child? Perhaps that's what your SIL needs it for.

AreWeThereYet000 · 06/08/2017 00:29

She might be opening them a savings account/ISA with a opening balance. You would need the birth certificate for this

Alibobbob · 06/08/2017 00:30

I was thinking savings account too. It will be in the baby's name so she will need it as proof of I.d.

You need it to buy premium bonds for children

DilysMoon · 06/08/2017 00:34

Yes a savings account springs to mind. Dfil recently bought premium bonds for dc, they didn't need the original certificate but had to have a certified copy of it.

Longtime · 06/08/2017 00:45

We had to have a certified copy of my dad's death certificate to give to the bank when he passed away. They gave us the name of a nearby solicitor who could do it. So maybe get a copy and ask your bank's advice as to where you could get it certified?

LizB62A · 06/08/2017 00:48

You need it to buy premium bonds for children

No - you can only buy premium bonds for a child if it is your child, grandchild or great grandchild: www.nsandi.com/premium-bonds
So the SIL can't buy bond's for OP's DD

Don't give it to her unless she gives a good explanation of why she wants it.

(I'm extra careful since my exH and his current wife twice tried to claim the child benefit for my son, claiming first that he was living with them full-time, then that he was living with them 50% of the time. They had moved house a few years before and he has still never been to that house, not even for a visit, yet they were happy to lie to the then-CSA about it - so I never trust anyone now when it comes to paperwork about my son)

paxillin · 06/08/2017 00:49

I bet savings account, too. If she wanted to, she could get one without your permission. I got one for DSS once, just went to the registry office, paid £7 and they gave me a copy. Nobody asked who I was and we don't share a name. I later learned anybody can get anybody else's birth- death- or marriage certificate.

LizB62A · 06/08/2017 00:49

Oh, and if it's a savings account, make sure your SIL doesn't make herself the named adult on it .....

OutToGetYou · 06/08/2017 00:49

I don't think you can buy premium bonds for a niece or nephew, can only be bought for yourself, your own children or grandchildren. And even if she could, it won't be that cos she wouldn't be able to get it back next day as they are all done by post.

Can you even open a bank account for someone else's child? I'd have thought again it was only parents who could. I wasn't allowed to open one for Dss, his dad had to be there.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/08/2017 00:50

She can buy a certified copy at the local registry office without your permission for about £7 or you could get one for her if you didn't want to,part with the original.

notangelinajolie · 06/08/2017 00:56

Not sure why it's such a big secret that she can't tell you why she wants it? But seeing as she she can actually get your child's birth certificate without your permission from the General Registry Office you may as well give it to her

GreenTulips · 06/08/2017 00:58

I agree she can ring up for one and pay £6 ish for a copy - it's not difficult

brasty · 06/08/2017 01:00

I fail to see what weird thing anyone could do with a child's birth certificate. And if I knew your child's name, birthday and rough location, I could get an official copy.

GreenTulips · 06/08/2017 01:03

They can set up bogus marriages with certificates - obviously over 16s!! A few people discover they are already married!! LOl

GreenTulips · 06/08/2017 01:03

Family tree

SunnyLikeThursday · 06/08/2017 01:19

I would say no, and tell her that if she wants to do something like that they she needs to talk to you about it.

Forkrightorf · 06/08/2017 02:09

I was thinking savings account too, does that sound like something she'd do? Or how about one of those birth certificate display things? I've seen them on fb selling pages - frames and stands and things to put BC up on the wall. Bizarre to me but it floats some boats!

oldlaundbooth · 06/08/2017 02:17

Bit bizarre really.
