Hello my 10 week old son has dry skin on his face which has a pink tone to it. What would you recommend putting on his face that will really help. Aquaeos cream is not doing anything.

Thank you very much for your advice.

I'd recommend Aveeno cream. It's oatmeal based and really helped my dd.
Ask your GP if you can have it on prescription

KittyLetteMeEatAnEasterEgg · 28/03/2007 09:40

emulsifying ointment

DeputyMacDawg · 28/03/2007 09:48

have you tried plain olive oil?

Almond oil is a bit lighter than olive oil so you might prefer to try that. Ds has recently had some dry skin around his mouth and I have actually been putting lansinoh nipple cream on it (!) which seems to work wonderfully...

cathcart · 28/03/2007 09:49

hi fox, my dd does too and I can second the benefits of olive oil!

foxy1 · 28/03/2007 09:50

no i have tried aquaous cream, vitamin e oil and these don't seem to work. want to sort it out asap. thank you

Aveeno...tis fab stuff. Defo get a prescription though, tis 6.99 for a tube otherwise! You can also get Aveeno oil for the bath.

Furball · 28/03/2007 09:52

vaseline is also good

finknottle · 28/03/2007 09:54

I found Weleda calendula oil great, recommended by midwife.

finknottle · 28/03/2007 09:55

Forgot, they do face cream too.

NewDKmum · 28/03/2007 10:21

I got a prescrption for 'Double Base Cream' when my dd had similar - worked a treat. You can also get it over the counter at the Apothecary, but quite expensive.

Callisto · 28/03/2007 10:47

DD had dry skin as a baby and all pertochemical based rubbish just made it worse (I'm talking Johnsons etc here). Weleda calendula is brilliant, but anything plant based will do the trick. Also consider using plant based shampoo/baby bath/soap as the petrochemical stuff (Johnsons again etc - just read the ingredients) will make dry skin worse. I use Natracare for my DD.

Callisto · 28/03/2007 10:47

Doh, petrochemical of course.

donnie · 28/03/2007 10:47

another vote for aveeno - wonder cream!

Enid · 28/03/2007 10:48

change your washing powder to non-bio, pref Filetti

stop using fabric softener

dont put any creams on

thelittleElf · 28/03/2007 10:50

Another vote here for AVEENO, from a very happy nanny

rantinghousewife · 28/03/2007 10:53

The double base cream works wonders. And I would bath him in plain water and use aqueous cream to wash him, rather than baby soap/wash. I think HV can prescribe these creams now can't they?

snowleopard · 28/03/2007 10:53

Sudocrem seems to help my DS when he gets this, though it's probably full "evil petrochemicals" (though petrochemicals are organic in origin - in both senses of the word - so I'm not sure why they're so evil...?)

Also DS only suffers from this in winter, and you may find it clears up in spring/summer.

Whoooosh · 28/03/2007 10:54

Another vote for Aveeno here too-fab stuff.

AxelF · 28/03/2007 10:59

We use double base on our dd when she gets it, but stop once it sorts itself out. You dont want a recurring problem because you always use it.

Babbit · 28/03/2007 11:01

Another vote for Weleda. All baby stuff suitable from birth. Don't use anything in the bath and wash baby clothes with Ecoballs. Good luck.

wellforonething · 28/03/2007 12:15

Diprobase is good - very mild, available on prescription. And plant-based things can be just as harsh as 'petrochemical' based things - it all depends what's gone into them. Plus oil basically comes from millions of years of decaying plant-like organisms anyway! Once you've got your oil, or your plants, you can do all sorts of things with them to make something either harsh or mild for human skin.

Watch out for creams with nuts, sesame etc. if you've any allergies - probably best avoided in favour of something blander.

Worth asking the health visitor, she definitely gave us a prescription for double base. But it was about 4 years ago, if she can't then go to the dr.

thebecster · 29/03/2007 13:45

If it doesn't improve with emollients or looks inflamed, we had wonderful result with Napiers Infant Starflower Cream (available on internet) on the exzema on my DS's face. Dr had prescribed steroid cream which I didn't want to use, but the starflower cream sorted it out completely without steroid. It's pricey, but miraculous, if Aveeno doesn't do the trick.
