Babies first shoes

My little boy is 9 months old and is trying to walk. He is walking around he furniture and will walk while holding a hand but he's not confident enough to actually let go yet. We thought as soon as he walks confidently on his own, we will buy his first shoes.

However these past few days I have seen a few people already buying their babies their first shoes. Aged around 10 months. They arnt walking yet so do they really need them while they arnt walking on their own?

I thought bare feet was best. He walks flat on his feet so I don't see a need for them before he actually starts to walk on his own outside. Or it is best to get some shoes. Genuine advice as I really don't know...

The recommendation is to wait until they've been walking unaided for 6 weeks before buying shoes, or longer if they are not going to be walking outside!

As soon as DD started to walk, I got her some shoes so she could walk outside (the playgroups we go to have an outside paved play area, and also I wanted to take her to the park).

She doesn't wear shoes in the house or in the garden, so even though she has been walking for a couple months now she is usually unshod.

My 9mo is the same he has a pair of Pre walkers from next I carry in my bag if we are somewhere and he insists on standing and wobbling about so his feet don't get filthy but otherwise he's barefoot or in socks

I waited until mine had started to walk confidently indoors and I wanted to take them outdoors. So 14-17 months.

We used slipper socks for walking outside before baby was ready for real shoes, e.g

Yes they should be walking independently for 6 weeks before shoes, and even then only wear them when necessary.

I think first shoes are a bit landmarky, so people tend to buy them before they need them. Like some people think early weaning or moving up a car seat means their baby is "in front" somehow. A mix of impatience and the fact that people like buying things for babies. My newborn was bought several pairs of pram shoes because people thought they were cute. No thought to whether it was good for feet.

Bare feet is best.

Pram shoes. Bleughhhhh!!! 🤢

You're right op. When they're walking confidently outside. Even then ds had Doodles. Canvas Clarks shoes. Much softer and unclompy.

peachlimeorange · 01/08/2017 21:30

Mine were pulling themselves along but when we got them "oos" they walked Smile

NipInTheAir · 01/08/2017 21:34

No need until they are walking properly. MIL went on and on about the DC have little shoes. What for, a walk round the pram?

Muddlingalongalone · 01/08/2017 21:41

Mine were barefoot (or grudgingly socked) until they were walking outside.
Nursery asked us to get dd1 shoes at 10 months when she started for the garden, which she'd grown out of by the time she was actually walking 8 weeks later. Didn't bother for Dd2!!!

Thank you everyone! I'm glad I'm not going mad. Definitely not tempted to put shoes on him until he's ready (I'm not really a shoe person myself lol) yeah we never really bothered with pram shoes either as socks are sufficient i think.

Seems a bit of a waste of money for something they don't really need!

Agreecwuth walking for 6 weeks before getting shoes. I still prefer my son to pad around in his socks inside (has is 30 months) as it's better for his feet. I'd like to try barefoot shoes but nowhere near me stocks them.

tappitytaptap · 02/08/2017 12:55

We got ours maybe 3 weeks after walking, because he wanted to walk outside and I wasn't about to let him do it in his socks!

BellyBean · 02/08/2017 16:12

We bought soft moccasin shoes at this stage (snugglefeet?). No defence against puddles but better than socks.

SarahJonesS · 02/08/2017 17:27

I bought dd first shoes at around 6 weeks after she started walking. I wasn't waiting for that date, she just started to want to walk around when I took her to the park so needed something for her feet.

She had some slipper socks before then but that was only to keep her feet warm.

BringMeTea123 · 12/08/2017 09:47

Well hes let go of the furniture and is off. He's only taking 4-5 steps at a time now but sure it'll come. I'm so excited but still won't be buying shoes until he is walking everywhere confidently. At the moment he's just letting go of the furniture. So proud!
