When did you stop waking baby to feed

I'm currently waking my LO to feed but I'm not sure when I need to stop and let him wake up to let me know.

He is only 11 weeks old so I'm assuming not yet for a while but he had already gained 2 1/2 oz on his 5 day check up.

Just wondered when you stopped

Thank you

Was he premature? I did this with prem DS for a while until we'd established feeding as medically advised. Never did it with term DD. I'd speak to your doctor or paediatrician

Confused I've never woke a baby up to feed it

I've never ever woken any of my 3 to feed. Were you told you needed to by a midwife / health visitor? If so you need to ask their advice. If not then just stop!

Pancaker · 31/07/2017 15:11

Never woke to feed either of DC2. As long as no concerns on weight gain or underlying conditions, feed baby on demand when they wake.

FlavaFlav · 31/07/2017 15:11

Until they were back up to their birth weight and feeding was well established. At least every two hours during that period.

Batoutahell · 31/07/2017 15:11

I e never woken a baby to feed it. Unless there are health issues I don't think it is ever necessary to do that.

Smokingcatapillar · 31/07/2017 15:13

I stopped waking both my children once we were discharged from the midwife on day 10. Although they still woke to feed 2/3 hourly until 8-9 weeks (breastfed)

FruitBadger · 31/07/2017 15:13

Never woke DS to feed him after we left hospital, so 2 days. He was 12 days overdue and 8lb 12oz so a long way from small / prem though!

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 31/07/2017 15:15

I never did either but he was 9lbs13 so I didn't need to worry if he went without a feed for an hue or so

FlavaFlav · 31/07/2017 15:16

Seems different people are told different things, where I live the 2 hour advice is given as standard and it was invaluable for me as I had sleepy babies who would happily go hours between feeds as newborns then struggled to feed as they were so weak. Feed on demand requires the baby to demand it which doesn't always happen and can lead to supply issues.

Lules · 31/07/2017 15:19

When he stopped being jaundiced at a couple of days old. He made it clear when he wanted feeding!

Batoutahell · 31/07/2017 15:21

It's ok to feed a baby 3 times in an hour too if they are looking for it. I wonder if the same people who wake babies for a feed also hold them off if they are looking for one too soon? All this bloody advice, mums and babies following instinct would probably work better.

He was 4 days overdue so not premature. I have looked around on the internet and there seems to be a lot of people told this to?

It was every 2-3 hours in the day and up to 4 at night

I guess it depends on who you have. I'll ask at his 10 day check up

Only woken a baby once to feed, she got so angry and refused to eat. Took 3 hours to settle her! Never tried that again... Was only advised to wake her to feed as struggling to gain weight.
Even premature DD1 I was told to feed on demand only she woke every 2 hours for about 6 months

kel1234 · 31/07/2017 15:43

I've never done that. I went by my baby will wake up when he's hungry. I'd never ever wake a sleeping baby.
My son was ff every 3-4 hours, and slept through from 3 months.

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 31/07/2017 15:55

The only one i ever woke was my preemie as advised by the hospital but was told to stop once he reached 8lbs

BigSandyBalls2015 · 31/07/2017 16:00

Don't wake a sleeping baby!! They can't be hungry if they're asleep, surely. Diff if ill or very tiny.

The only time I ever woke one of mine was on the advice of the health visitor, as they were twins, to get them into the same routine at night.

Ecureuil · 31/07/2017 16:03

Never once woke either of mine to feed.
Although didn't have to, they both woke at least 2 hourly for around 8 months.

EwanWhosearmy · 31/07/2017 16:05

I've had 5 babies and never ever woken one to feed. What bizarre advice.

AprilShowers16 · 31/07/2017 16:05

I've never woken a baby to feed it 😬 If you're worried about weight gain then maybe speak to health visitor but I would just let them wake when they're hungry if they're putting on weight fine

Migraleve · 31/07/2017 16:06

Let your baby sleep, they will be fine

angelgirls · 31/07/2017 16:07

Why would you wake him? I have never woke any of my 4 children for feeds including my very very tiny 5lb overdue baby, she was eating in day and gaining weight

BertieBotts · 31/07/2017 16:08

Ask at the check up. I was told don't let him go more than 3h in the day but at night to leave him. When there are specific weight gain or blood sugar concerns, they sometimes tell you to wake them after 4 hours just in case but for most babies this isn't necessary.
