Do you use nappy cream at every change?

I bought some bog standard nappy cream, no idea what make, and then my sister brought me some sudocrem from the UK.
So 2 questions:
a. Do you whack on a bit of cream at every change or just when their bum looks sore?
b. Would you use sudocrem at every change or just when their bum is sore i.e. use the other bog standard cream the rest of the time?
Thanks!

I only ever used it when dd's bum looked sore. Rather than a barrier each time.

Mainly because I thought it would be more effective as a one off than a permanent thing...

Only ever had nappy rash when teething, so didn't need all the time.

I only use when DD's bottom is sore. DH slaps Sudocrem on at most changes I think.

BTW, Metanium is fantastic for very sore bottoms, miles better than Sudocrem.

i only use cream if he has any redness(very rare). modern disposables and modern liners for washables are pretty effective at keeping wetness of skin so you don't really need barrier or antiseptic cream

IntergalacticWalrus · 27/03/2007 14:46

Only use it when they have nappy rash, and don;t use any for of barrier cream, for example vaseline, as thats just a one way ticket to a baboon's bottom

wow that was quick ! thanks girls.. do you use talc?

OP posts:
raspberryberet · 27/03/2007 14:52

Don't use talc, the dust it forms isn't good for them. Baby powder is better but still not necessary IMO.

I always used cream at every change with dd because she got sore if I didn't. Ds was fine, I just slathered the cream on at bedtime or when his bottom was sore. I guess it depends on how sensitive the bottom in question is!

Indith · 27/03/2007 14:54

I don't use much on ds. Luckily he dosn't get nappy rash. I put som nice badger baby balm on his bottom in the mornings usually which he seems to like after spending 13 hours in the same nappy! If he has any sore bits I actually found that kamilsosan worked best.

Flamesparrow · 27/03/2007 14:57

I very rarely use anything

BigCremeEggs · 27/03/2007 14:59

i only ever used it if DD had a red sore bum.. so used cottom adn lukewarm water then put the cream on

my Nieces mum put the cream on at every change!!...dont see whats the point!

BigCremeEggs · 27/03/2007 15:00

oops! cotton wool...

ScottishThistle · 27/03/2007 15:00

I always apply cream at bedtime & when bottom looks like it's getting irritated.

IntergalacticWalrus · 27/03/2007 15:04

cool chamomile tea is god if they get a rash too.

nd they can't get a tub of it ans smear it all over the bedroom carpet like DS1 does with sudocrem if he can get his mitts on it

LucyJu · 27/03/2007 15:11

Hardly ever use it - neither of my dds have ever had any problems with nappy rashes. HV told me to use sparingly, if at all, as it can make disposable nappies (if you use those) less effective.
Was also advised only to use baby wipes for a dirty (as opposed to wet) bottom, as over-use of these can irritate the skin. As I said, I've never had any problems with nappy rash with my two - but perhaps I've just been lucky.

Flamesparrow · 27/03/2007 15:11

I didn't think of that as a cream IGW - use that

juuule · 27/03/2007 17:44

No. I only used cream if their bottom looked sore.

nappyneeds · 27/03/2007 18:50

Sudocream is a good barrier cream and a handy thing to have in the bathroom cabinet. I use Drapoline on the odd occasion dd looks slightly red. Otherwise (and 95% of the time) i use nothing. Dont forget plenty of airtime
