I-am-doing-a-degree-with-the-OU...(thank-God..or-I-would-without-doubt-snore-my-way-through-lectures-at-a-bricks-and-mortar-Uni,-no-doubt-dribbling-on-the-desk!)..and-am-supposed-to-put-in-16-hours-a-week!!..Ha-bloody-ha...I-am-lucky-if-I-do.6..and-that's-a-GOOD-week!..and-includes-the-time-spent-snoozing-into-my-books!!!!

I-need-to-go-to-bed-earlier---I-know-that..I-go-to-bed-about-1am-and-am-up-before-7..(and-that-includes-oversleeping-EVERY-day!!)..but-its-hard-to-do-that..I-have-too-much-to-do..

I-live-on-coffee...but-am-considering-cutting-it-down-or-OUT-..because-although-you-get-acaffiene-boost,-you-get-peaks-and-troughs-don't-you..?(sadly-all-the-troughs-occur-when-I-sit-at-my-desk-to-study!)

I-am-not-bored-with-my-course...far-from-it!..I-could-almost-"read-it-for-pleasure"..but-as-soon-as-I-get-to-it..my-brains-sends-my-body-to-sleep!--I-have-had-this-problem-to-some-extend-since-I-started-studying-2-and-a-half-years-ago..but-it's-worse-now.

(Have-just-had-funny-vision-of-submitting-my-next-TMA-looking-like-THIS!!--Note-to-self:-Ensure-new-keyboard-arrives-in-next-two-weeks!!!!)

Didn't really go away. Had to go and tidy up while feeling sorry for myself after having three fillings (while we're on the subject of drooling!).

It IS all my fault. I admit it! But you enjoy it really and are good at it. Sorry to hear about your dad and sister. Yes, ask for an extension for next TMA if you need it. (My students ask for extensions because they just had to go skiing for two weeks at Christmas, or whatever... And I say no, of course, because I am an evil bitch! Though more axe-murderer than knife-wielder! )

Oh, and you Molesworth... buck your ideas up! (No, seriously, if you are stuck on a paragraph, leave it. Put a few notes about what you think might come next, and then move on to a bit you feel more confident about. You'll find it easier to finish the bit you're stuck on if you know where it is going....

Ew-Ellbell-sorry-about-the-fillings!-Three-at-once!-That's-grim!!-[adopts-strict-stance]--Had-you-been-avoiding-the-dentist??

I-don't-want-to-ask-for-anything-(re-extension/substitution)-because-there-will-come-a-time-when-I-may-HAVE-to,-ie-when-(when!-don't-ask!)-we-move.

You're allowed to ask for more than one, though. I'd have thought that the current situation more than merits it.

No, haven't been avoiding dentist, but have very dodgy teeth. He wanted to pull another one out while he was in there, but I panicked and said no. Should have let him and got it over with, shouldn't I?

I-am-sort-of-superstitious-about-asking...because,-so-far-I-never-have,-I-feel-like-resorting-to-it-would-be-inviting-further-stress!--(I-never-claimed-to-be-sane-but-you-know-that!)

I-hate-dentists-too-but-not-as-much-as-DH-who-seems-to-afraid-of-only-two-things-in-life,--dentist-and-snakes!..(When-there-are-so-many-worse-things!!)

I quite often fall asleep in the library through the day!!!! Goes with being a mum and a student I think!!

sunnyjim · 29/03/2007 15:36

I do, my day is 10pm, go to bed hoping for some sleep, 11pm DS wakes up, 12pm I finally drift off, 3am DS wakes up again, 4am I fall back asleep, 6am DS ready to start day.

6-9am sorting out DS/me/DH ready for work/nursery etc

9am - 4pm work

4pm-7pm nursery pick up, DS tea, bath etc etc

7pm DS asleep

7.30pm eat our tea

8pm, do washing etc

9pm panic cos done no OU work, try to open book - fall asleep

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 30/03/2007 12:17

I'm so glad I'm not alone! Although that's not much help to any of us Snoozing Students!

People who think that an OU degree is a "Mickey Mouse" one (there seem to be a fair few of this opinion out there in real life!) should read this read! I think we might deserve our degrees a little MORE than many other students as we are usually only doing OU because we can't fit it in any other way.. and then we struggle!! (Imagine the luxury of going to uni.. and sitting there with x amount of alloted hours to work.. and not being able to be distracted by the phone/the washing machine/the school runs/dinner needing cooking because you are there to study!) And we certainly shouldn't be penalised by banks (ie not allowing us to open student accounts) "because we are not full time"! How much more full time do we need to be??!

choosyfloosy · 30/03/2007 12:24

Do you really find people who think OU is Mickey Mouse?

I must say that back when I had a proper job recruiting people, anyone who'd done an OU degree went immediately into the 'probable interview' pile before I'd even looked at anything else because of the discipline/ commitment that distance learning requires.

I've only doing an A-level atm, with a place at uni next October, but am already finding myself waking up in odd places having thought 'I'll just have a look at the revision book while ds is watching In The Night Garden...'

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 30/03/2007 12:31

That's encouraging Choosy!! I hope that's the case with most employers now. But yes I have come across this attitude several times (one of them was the H of a student on my course!! ). Have to say though that it seems to be usually uninformed (ignorant?) people who say/think it it..

My (male! ) friend actually said to me when I started studying, "Why bother? You'll be 38 by the time you have the degree.. that's too old to be taken seriously in anything new and earning any decent money!" Thanks mate!

sunnyjim · 30/03/2007 13:40

I've had nothing but respect from people who know I'm doing my degree the 'hard' way through the OU.

I do massivly resent the notion that some people get to study minus kids, mortgage, washing, phone etc etc however.

sunnyjim · 30/03/2007 13:41

gah sorry - i meant that last bit to read I ersent the people who can study without.....

(had a bad morning, up at 4am and trying to sort out all house and study and watching next door students toddle off to the hard day of lectures at 10am and 2pm.)
