night time nappy

DS is nearly 3 and not potty trained. I'm planning to have a go later this summer. The last few weeks he's been wetting the bed and I feel like I'm constantly washing. We're using Aldi size 6 at night now but it's no better. Size 5 are fine in the day and he tells me a lot of the time when he's filled it anyway. I've also tried giving him less milk before bed. He used to have 7oz, I reduced to 5oz this week but it just made the wetting later (5.30 rather than 4am). I've also tried putting pull ups over his nappy. The wet is always up his front. Any suggestions for what else I can do/ different nappies I can buy? Huggies drynites keep coming up on google. Has anyone tried these? Are there any others you think are better? We're meant to be staying with friends the 1st weekend of August but I'm seriously thinking of cancelling because the wetting's so frequent.

Don't Pampers do a size 7 nappy now I think?? My friend got some in tesco recently I'm sure they were size 7

BunloafAndCrumpets · 27/07/2017 18:15

Don't worry about the weekend. It would be sad if it stopped you seeing your friends. Practical ways around it: could you try changing him before you go to bed, bring own bedding, even bring one of those kids ready beds for him? But honestly it's common and ok to wet the bed, if you give friends heads up and use waterproof sheet protection any reasonable person would hopefully accept it as part of being a toddler.

I just put the DryNites on, but use the size 4-7 ones. I think they're maybe just a bit bigger than nappies so have more coverage if you know what I mean.

If you're staying with friends, just take a spare waterproof sheet or dine of the bed mat things.

Friends, unless very odd, won't care about wet sheets!

Ds1 is just 2 and had started leaking nappies recently. He'd not been drinking much and I'd got into the habit if giving him squash at dinner time, which he was drinking all of, and then 10Oz cows milk at bedtime. And, the real issue I think, using tesco pull ups.

I changed back to water at dinner time, still gave the milk and went back to pampers. The nappy goes on before he gets in bed, so he has bath, clean normal nappy. Pj's, stories, milk, pampers nappy, bed.

Try putting the nighttime nappy on after the milk and literally the last thing before bed?

DD (4.5) wears nappies at night (dry during the day). We have several waterproof sheets (we went for hippychick ones, not cheap, but reasonably pleasant to sleep on, and definitely waterproof). We take them with us when we sleep elsewhere. We also change DD's nappy when we go to bed if she's producing so much wee she soaks through the nappy - we've been using 6+'s, which fit her fine, and she's large for her age.

Her nappy is always wet in the morning, we don't make a big thing of it. She knows most of her friends don't wear nappies at night, but we've told her she has to have a week of dry nappies before she doesn't need one. We're a way off that - hopefully she'll start producing vasopressin soon.

3luckystars · 27/07/2017 20:17

Boots nappies size 6 have great soakage. Try these at night.

SprinkleOfInsanity · 27/07/2017 20:24

I've heard that putting the nappy on backwards cuts down on boys leaking out of their nappies at night, probably because the 'back' would come further up his midriff, and isn't as stretchy as the 'front' part of the nappy once it's turned around. Might be worth a shot.

cauliflowercheese14 · 27/07/2017 20:30

I use a flat cot waterproof cut in half and cover the top have of DDs bed with that and an old flat cot sheet. Any leak and I whip off the wet layer. Can do multiple layers like that and as I've several I can rotate them.

cauliflowercheese14 · 27/07/2017 20:31

Top half! Where she sleeps!

coursedarlin · 27/07/2017 21:17

My DD is fully toilet trained in the day. She was 3 in may but can't crack the night yet. We use the dry nites pull-ups and have no leaks at all with a very full pull up by the morning. I figured that cracking the daytime was more important than the night time for the moment.

I think layering the bed is a great idea, I know a few posters have suggested that. We seem to be a bit lacking in bedding. I've got 2 sets for each bed so 4 altogether but my duvet is a double where as DS has 2 single duvets on his. Not that he sleeps under either.

I've put an Asda 6+ nappy on him tonight. He won with the milk though and got a small amount at story time. I'm going to check and maybe change him when I go to bed although I don't really want to start changing him part way through because it takes me a while to get him back to sleep. I think that's the lights being on though - they're quite bright. I could probably do with getting a lamp for the hallway and changing him in semi darkness.

Tomorrow night I think I'll try the drynites and see how they hold. Like I said earlier the main thing I'm bothered about is him leaking on our weekend away. The friends we're staying with don't have children and I think I'd be embarassed if he wet although taking a sheet with us is a good idea. We took one of DS's duvets and his pillows with us last time because I thought he'd sleep better with bedding from home.

Drynites won't have enough soakage. Try BOOTS nappies #6

Also, put a fitted sheet on the bed, with a plastic sheet over it, then make the bed as normal.
If there is an accident at nigh and the bed gets wet, you can strip the wet sheets off and the bed is ready made underneath.

3luckystars · 27/07/2017 22:34

Also, Lidl are doing great value bedding next Monday the 31st.

overduemamma · 27/07/2017 22:36

I use tescos own 6+ and never had a problem with them and my little boy is coming up 3. We've also started potty training this week 😬 good luck x

3luckystars · 27/07/2017 22:37

I just checked and Lidl in the UK are doing the bedding on Sunday the 30th.

Iizzyb · 27/07/2017 22:42

Try night time pyjama pants & go up a size if needs be. We use dry nites they are great. It's much easier & all kids are different so have another go at potty training but when it's time it will be so much easier. I had a go just before ds turned 3 & he had no clue what we were doing. Tried again at Christmas (3yrs 2mths) and we could go out after a couple of days. Started Boxing Day & booked 2 weeks off work. Cancelled the 2nd week & he went back to nursery. Good luck xx

bakingcupcakes · 28/07/2017 06:53

I'll check out Lidl for extra bedding this weekend, thanks. It's more the double sheets that are a problem as I haven't got enough to layer with.

I checked his nappy when I went to bed last night and there was hardly anything in it. It was full this morning but hadn't leaked anywhere Smile That was using the Asda 6+ although a couple of people have mentioned Boots so I might get a pack of theirs too. I'll keep the drynites for potty training.

Those who've done potty training did you keep to nappies at night for a bit or switch straight to pj pants?

I'm really hoping DS will grasp it quick although I have got 12 days off in August to do it in. And in theory it's a good time of year to be doing extra washing as it can go outside to dry. This is another stupid question but am I meant to wipe his willy with toilet roll when he's had a wee? I haven't bothered when he's gone before but we've been going straight in the bath. I'm so clueless!

I kept my son in pull-ups at night until he was dry for a while. Good luck.

Hullabaloo31 · 28/07/2017 10:17

My ds is 5.5, toilet trained at 2.5 but still not dry at night. He'll do a run of a few weeks dry and then wet again for a week. We use the biggest Aldi nappies and they usually cope, things that have the most impact are getting him to drink more during the day (which I have little control over during term time) and nothing to drink after 5:30pm (bedtime at 7).

I'd definitely stop the bedtime milk and give it earlier with dinner.

Artistic · 29/07/2017 15:12

Potty trained over a week with pull ups at night. After nearly 10 dry nights, stopped those as well. But we definitely do a wee just before bed to give her the best chance of staying dry. Nothing but water in the evening.

Cutesbabasmummy · 31/07/2017 15:11

Read "Oh Crap it's Potty Training". MY DS is 30 months and in a week he's got the wees sorted. Pooing is a work in progress but I would recommend the book to everyone!
