Anyone's boy had a hernia? Advice??

I think my 7yo ds has a hernia. He's got a swelling on the right side of his groin. He said doesn't hurt unless he touches it. He also has a hyperspadias , he had this operated on at 12mo but the hole has since reappeared underneath although this isn't causing any problems as yet could it be related or is it just coincidence?
What treatment did your child have?
GP appointment has been made but only for next week
Thanks

I had a hernia when I was 5 and had surgery. I've actually had 3 of them and had surgery each time. If he does have one, surgery will probably be necessary because that is the only treatment, and the risk of strangulation of the bowel must be corrected.

Ds was born with two. One was an ingrinal (like your son) and the other was umbilical (In his belly button). Both were repaired surgically under GA as a day case. The ingrinal hernia is fairly urgent as pp said due to the risk of strangulation (where the bowel goes out but can't be reduced). Going to GP next week should be fine but make sure that they refer you to a surgeon before you leave. If it gets hot or red or very painful then it is important to seek medical advice asap. We were shown how to reduce it by gently massaging it, but it is only a temporary fix.

The op was just over an hour. No PE for a month. Ds was only a few months when he had first one so wasn't moving much or talking but he didn't seem in much pain. Scar is tiny. I can spot it but I know where I am looking. Once they have had one there is a slightly higher risk of having a second one at some point.

we noticed my ds had an inguinal hernia when he was a toddler. the gp told us to wait and see what happens. i can't remember if it popped back in but he was kicked in the nuts at school aged 6 or 7 and it happened again, this time it was more severe. he was referred by the gp and had surgery - he was in and out in a day, no scarring and no further problems. he's 12 now.

He went to GP today managed to get a cancellation. Dr confirmed its a hernia and has referred him back to the consultant he's already under from his hyperspadias to say he needs seeing asap. Been told no running or sports which isn't ideal for a 7yo in the school hols but needs must. Advised to go A&E if gets bigger or causes pain

I'm glad you know! Definitely, if your son starts feeling poorly, or fever, pain, vomiting, get him to hospital immediately. The surgery is very easy and very routine. He will be just fine before you know it!
