Help - constipated dd

Started potty training dd (2.5) 3 weeks ago and it has been fine - she is generally dry day and night.

The only problem is that the second week in she started complaining her bottom hurt and often saying she wanted to go for a poo but couldn't. Sometimes she will cry with the effort of having one.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Her diet has lots of fruit and cereal in and not much high fat stuff so am not sure that changing diet would help.

Feel this is my fault as I have probably stressed her too much about potty training.

Water... lots and lots of water. Juice too, but mostly water!

My dd2 (just 5) had a horrendous constipation problem before Christmas, which ended up with us having to take her to A&E for a suppository which eventually got things moving. She has a great diet with lots of fruit and veg and fibre, but we worked out that she wasn't drinking much and that was the root of the problem.

Is it possible that with the potty training you have been subconsciously limiting dd's drinks a bit? Or maybe she's just like my dd and doesn't seem to feel thirsty. I stand over dd now and make sure she has plenty of water with and between meals and juice a couple of times a day. Seems to have worked, as she has been OK since Christmas.

orange juice freshly squeezed stuff works wonders in this house! Also if she says bottom hurts (and this sounds disgusting but i have to do it for DD regularly on advice from doctor) bit of sudocream or castor cream on a cotton bud just around her anus helps it come out better IYKWIM
sorry if TMI!!!!

Goosey... when I took dd to A&E they made me put the suppository - ahem - in place myself. I knew I was dithering when dd turned to me and said 'Are you sure you know what you're doing, mummy?' (to which I resisted the urge to reply 'Do I look like a nurse?'!). Good luck.
