What age can babies go from carrycot to parent facing position?!?

Our 10 week old is a very alert little boy who loves to look around and see what's going on. I like to take him out for walks daily but using the carrycot seems to be wearing thin. With the hood up to shade him, it's usually very dark, the carrycot cover thing restricts my view of him and him of me, and there is only room for one toy I can hang on the handle to keep him entertained (which I have to play with constantly to keep him happy :-/) I feel bad taking him out as it must be really boring for him!!

Obviously at his age I know babies usually sleep on walks but he doesn't always want to and neither do I need him to as he's sometimes just woke up but I feel the carrycot is forcing this with it being so limiting with stimulation. He usually ends up crying where I have to get him out where he will be happier (not ideal!)

I know research says lay babies flat until 6 months but it also says that parent facing pram seats are suitable from birth which has confused me?! I'm not planning on sitting him completely upright obviously but just wondering if anyone else moved from carrycot to parent facing position with slight incline to make walks/outings more enjoyable? X

I moved mine to the seat unit when they had good head support and when the carrycot was getting too small for them.

It's best for gross motor development to wait until they can sit up by themselves. Though I know loads of people do do this before.

Babies don't need lots of stimulation or even toys at that age, he is likely crying about something else.

I shoved my cardigan under the carrycot mattress to prop him up and took it out when he wanted to sleep. (Photo is very propped but it was easily adjusted)

We moved to seat when he was sitting independently.

Mine also moved when they had good head support, I decided to because I saw so many people say they did the same when their child had good head control and wanted to look around.
I didn't do it for very long journeys though. I think that's why the advice to lay them flat. Like the advice not to leave in car seats for too long, but you can get those car seat prams for short journeys.

My youngest was never in the carrycot, only the seat. I bought an insert thingy to make it cosier and a bit flatter (Uppababy Vista).

My eldest was probably about 12/14wks. She screamed in the carrycot but was happy being carried. We concluded the carrycot was dull, swapped her into the seat (with insert) and she was happy as Larry.

Aww thanks so much for the replies! I love the propping up idea - he looks very content in his picture!

And thank you for the recommendation with the insert for the seat! :) xx

We switched when he grew out of the carrycot which was earlier than I'd planned. We keep the parent facing seat in lie back position though as his heads strong but he's still a little unbalanced. On nice days why not keep the hood down but buy a parasol to shade instead? This is what I do and it means he can see more of what's around.

Mine switched when 5 and 6 months respectively. Would've waited till 6 months with both but DS1 was so long he couldn't fit into his carrycot anymore at 5 months. I wouldn't switch them too early as lying flat is best for sleeping as long as possible. If baby wants to look around why not use a carrier/sling? Smile

We switched at 10 weeks. My son was a 10lber though with very good head control. He go frustrated being in carry cot and use to cry when put in it. We just kept it in lie back position until he could sit up.
