Silly question from anxious first time mum

Silly question alert. We've had a bbq today and kept the barbecue well away from dd (3 months today) and it was in the open. I'm still paranoid about sids though. Do we need to worry about bbq smoke or is it just cigarette smoke?

Please don't worry. Cigarette smoke has many unpleasant chemicals in it, and lingers around the house and clothes of smokers. It's not the same thing at all as the much cleaner smoke of a BBQ outside where the smoke is nowhere near your baby.

Thank you both, that's really helped. very anxious at the moment.

We had an open coal fire in our house when my first was born. He was absolutely fine.

Aquamarine1029 · 17/07/2017 02:38

Your baby will be absolutely fine. You did all the right things by keeping her well away and it was in the open air. Try not to worry for one more second!

Agree this is nothing to worry about. If you finding your mind getting stuck in a bit of a loop/rut of worrying excessively about things like this though it might be worth talking to your GP or HV? Lots of new mums suffer with anxiety and they might be able to recommend some CBT therapy to help you bring your anxious thoughts under control. Or even a low dose of an SSRI anti-depressant type medication which can be very helpful for anxiety if you're suffering a lot?

Please don't feel ashamed to ask for help with these feelings. For many women they go hand in hand with becoming a mum for the first time and you won't be judged, just supported for asking for help xx

Not a problem, honestly Flowers

I'm definitely struggling with anxiety. I'll have a chat to my hv as i'm scared to go to sleep at the moment.

Do talk to your health visitor. How was your night?

Helbelle75 · 19/07/2017 18:01

That's good - things always look brighter and calmer after sleep Smile
