Submucosal tongue tie?

DS2 is 3 weeks old and ebf. It's fine in terms of pain for me and he is so far gaining weight well. However there are a few issues:

-Clicking and squeaking when feeding
-Spluttering/coughing/choking during feeds (not just at let down)
-Unsettled at the breast, bobs on and off
-Frequent short feeds, I can easily spend 2+ hours at a time with him on and off every few minutes
-Lots of milk leaks out of the side of his mouth
-Disorganised suck swallow pattern. He might suck 5 times before swallowing then suck frantically again a random number of times
-Slips off my nipple
-Milk blister on top lip
-Generally unsettled when awake, seems frustrated and always rooting/keen to be fed

I bf DS1 for 18 months with no issue so this is all a bit new. I saw a local lactation consultant today who has a great reputation for helping with positioning and attachment and for spotting tongue ties. She said he possibly has a submucosal tongue tie. His tongue doesn't lift to the roof of his mouth when he cries and has a slight bowl shape, indented in the middle and raised at the edges. She is putting in a referral to the consultant to have a look and cut it if needed. He has a good reputation and I don't think he'd do anything unnecessarily. But as DS2 is gaining weight he will be back of the queue for NHS treatment, probably a 3 week wait. I can pay £195 to see him privately sooner.

The lactation consultant also observed a breastfeed and has given me some tips to improve his latch. Initially I felt the 3 week wait was a good thing as it gave me time to work on my breastfeeding technique though I must say I find it a bit disheartening - all feels very technical when it came so easily with DS1. I was lucky I suppose. Anyway now I'm wondering if I should just try and get the money together to see the consultant sooner and either rule it out or not.

Long post short, has anyone here has experience of a submucosal tongue tie? What issues did you have? Did snipping it help?

I could have written your post myself!!
I've also seen a lactation consultant and on 3rd feeding plan now. She's slowly putting on weight now but to be honest we've decided to see private clinic for tongue tie on Thursday. 3 weeks is too long to keep up this feeding plan, baby is exhausted and all I do is feed, express, sleep repeat.
Yes we could persevere if the weight is going on but I also feel I should be enjoying this time with her, not acting like a dairy cow!

I wish I could tell you we've already had it done and it helped but I can't I'm afraid. My friends baby had a proper tie, like a bit of string and he's 100% better now

Hard work isn't it!! I never really understood how people found bf so hard but I clearly didnt appreciate how easy I had it with DS1. Yes he fed all the time and never slept but at least bf was enjoyable! I find myself wanting to put it off this time round. Can I ask what your feeding plan was? Nice to know we're not alone at least. This baby pukes and poops for England so he is obviously getting milk I guess, but bf is stressful and I don't like the idea of being in public which was NEVER an issue before but I know he'll be on and off, on and off and so noisy and vomity, it puts me off.

I'd be really interested to know how it goes on Thursday xx

This is my first baby but enough of my friends have tried and failed to make me realise it's not easy for everyone. I think props to anyone who perseveres with difficulties but I also respect those that say ok enough now.
Now all the nipple pain has gone I do enjoy feeding her, it's so lovely and cuddly...until hour 3 rolls in and she's half asleep, I'm half asleep, back is killing and I know she's no where near full!

The new plan is called switch and compression...nifty name. It's essentially continuously compressing the breast as she sucks, keeping her awake but as soon as she drops off (about every 10 mins as she gets so tired), unlatch her and put her on the other one...and back and forth like that. Do the usual like undress her, nappy change as well to wake her up.
Once she is well and truly 'milk drunk' (I hate this term now!!), i.e. I can't wake her up, she's completely gone, can do anything to her and she stays asleep, I put her down, wait 30 minutes and then express. This expressed milk goes at the back end of each following breast feed. Sometimes it's wasted but most of the time she will drink it.
Only been getting about 30-40ml in a 20 min session before...on domperidone now but haven't expressed for 24 hours simply because she's been attached to me so much and I've chosen sleep over expressing so don't know yet if it's working.
There has been the worry that she was going to get a sore tummy if she had too much watery milk from the switching but doesn't seem to have affected her as yet.

I will certainly come back to this thread after it's been done to let you know.
