Newborn seems so unhappy

My DD is 3.5 weeks old, the first couple weeks were great - she slept reasonably well, didn't mind lying awake in her Moses basket and just generally seemed quite content.

Now, however, she is so unsettled. She has terrible terrible wind that is sore for her to pass, she writhes about after feeds and doesn't like to be put down.

Also, she is so congested and she's now struggling to breath through her nose. She grunts and chokes on mucous all the time, especially when lying down. I was told she'd likely be quite mucousy as she was delivered quickly but she's getting worse. I use saline spray on her, a steamy bathroom and also use a nasal aspirator to get the worst out - what does come out is really thick and green and this morning had blood in it too. I've raised her head slightly in the sleepyhead but it doesn't seem to have made much difference.

She is my second DC and although some of this is familiar I don't remember it being this bad. She hardly cried at all before but has started crying really hard.

She's being bf and just wants to feed constantly when like this.

I've just managed to calm her down with a dummy which, when she takes it, seems to keep her happy for short spells.

Does all this sound normal? Should I phone the HV?

I would phone the HV as they know you and your DD. I've no advice about the mucous but my DS2 was pretty much always upset when he wasn't feeding for about the first 4 months. He would cry if he was put down, only slept on me and pretty much fed all the time.
Luckily my DS1 was 12 so it wasn't as difficult for me to just follow his lead and feed him while watching box set after box set. So to me constant feeding can be normal but as I say we didn't have the other issues you mention and DS2 was like it from the minute he was born so there was no content period before. Phone the HV, see what they say.

How long has she been having the green mucus? Could be a bad cold or infection. Might be worth popping to the Doctor to get chest etc listened to.

Sounds like some trapped wined as well, as a separate issue. Your LO needs to learn to pop and burp and once they do it should get better. Google tiger in the tree hold which was great for my DD (now 10 weeks, also my second) She was the same but not is much better at bringing up her wind

Should say: She was the same but now is much better at bringing up her wind

The mucus could be a sign of a milk allergy, and not being able to lie flat could be down to acid reflux. It sounds very similar to my 9 week old who is currently sleeping upright on my chest! She has been prescribed dairy free formula to try and reflux medicine.

Thanks for the replies

I mentioned to the HV about the mucous being green but she didn't seem concerned, I'm seeing her again on Monday so will mention it again.

She seems to bring wind up OK after a feed but when she's feeding I can literally hear the wind being gulped down and travelling through her gut, you can feel all the bubbles which must be so uncomfortable. Her latch isn't great which will be a huge contributor. She never seems to be able to settle after a feed now and it's difficult as I have DD1 to entertain too.

I'm considering cutting dairy out of my diet, I'll discuss it with the HV on Monday

Sounds like DD. Milk allergy. Definitely worth cutting out dairy for a couple of weeks

Sounds like a dairy allergy to me too. Are you EBF? If so try eliminating from your diet (remember butter is dairy too) and see what happens.
