Colic - please help

Hi ladies,

My 3 week old is struggling really bad with colic. He is up for the majority of the day and night, both me and my OH are exhausted and nothing seems to be working.

He cries even when he is eating which is so distressing to watch.

I have been mix feeding but have just bought aptamil comfort formula and some colief drops, would anyone recommend them or have you used them?

The usual techniques (burping laying flat, bicycling his legs) don't work!

There's a lot of thought these days that colic doesn't actually exist.

Have you considered it could be a cow's milk allergy?

abc12345 · 10/07/2017 18:05

with my son it was dairy intolerance. Nothing worked until we tried a dairy free formula (from gp)

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 10/07/2017 18:07

Is he sick or does he bring up acid? Does he hate lying down or being on his front? DD had reflux and this is what happened to her, initially written off as "colic"

Colic is horrendous so you have my sympathies. Flowers

Infacol was fantastic for my little one. You have to use it continually to see the most benefit. Lots of burbing during feeds and keeping them upright after feeds.

Dont be afraid to go to the dr thiugh as some problems can present as Colic but need different treatment

HappyGirl86 · 10/07/2017 18:17

Colief worked well for us. I also invested in anti colic bottles. I got the MAM ones but there are DR Brown ones too. Google "tiger in the tree hold"- it sometimes gave my baby a bit of relief. I also used to drive around in the car with her- somehow the bumps along the road helped a bit. Colic is such a stressful time. My daughters started to clear up around 16 weeks.

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 10/07/2017 19:20

Agree with Tiger in the Tree and colief and driving. A sling might help to. Yes also to looking into cow's milk protein allergy. I'd also get him checked for tongue tie.

Check bottle teats are not too slow or hard to suck from

Also consider giving Luke warm boiled water

Baths are good too

redrobinblue · 10/07/2017 19:24

My DS had an allergy to the milk protein - we used colief, is expensive (£12 a bottle I think) but we got on prescription after realising it worked. Was instant relief and worked the very first bottle we put it in. If you can afford it, it's really worth a try. Plus as far as I can remember, it's natural.

Good luck, and hope something works soon. Really recommend it though.

If he's not sleeping it may well be overtiredness leading to the meltdown and inconsolable screaming. At this age a good swaddle blanket, a white noise machine and a Cuski/lovey I'd slept with were a god send. Will dig out another thing that saved my sanity too

dementedpixie · 10/07/2017 19:27

Colief will not help with milk protein allergy as it breaks down the sugar in the milk(lactose) not the protein

li1972 · 10/07/2017 19:29

Yep, we were also told colic but it turned out to be severe reflux (acid!), caused by dairy intolerance. I put him on goats milk at 5 months old and he settled fairly quickly, with that and GP prescribed gaviscon. (Thank goodness the GP listened and agreed with me!) I still harbour a lot of anger at the HV for fobbing off my concerns...

li1972 · 10/07/2017 19:30

Also neither colief nor infacol helped DS - but definitely the place to start!

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 10/07/2017 19:54

This was my bible and I found my second stuck to it pretty much like clockwork. Took some of the guesswork out of what to do next and helped us fall into some kind of routine. I am not a routine/GinaFord type by any stretch but I found the consistent approach helped my second a lot. FIRst was a nightmare sleeper - still is aged 6!

Hello I feel your pain! My son started crying from 6pm onwards every night and had painful trapped wind. It was horrible to watch. I now give him gripe water and comfort milk and occasionally infacol as well if he's really bad. It started at 3 weeks and seems to be getting better now he's 9 weeks old.

Hang in there, it will pass!

Cocolocos · 11/07/2017 15:33

Sympathies, it is horrible! I found this website helpful and reassuring purplecrying.info/

Dreams16 · 11/07/2017 17:38

Have you looked to perhaps change the bottles your using I currently use Dr brown bottles and they have been pretty good with DS we use to use Tommie tippie bottles but after having a few crying issues with trapped wind we decided to change to the DR Brown bottles and they have been much better not so much trapped wind now and easier to burp little one

EveryoneTalkAboutPopMusic · 11/07/2017 21:20

How are things this evening @Charlieislovely?

Hudhud31 · 12/07/2017 13:56

I found out that my son had colic due to what I was eating. I had to cut out grapes completely and only infacol got his wind up properly for us

Colic is awful. My dd had it until we swapped her to comfort milk and used coilef.
It's awful hearing them crying in pain, for the first 8 weeks or so we used to drive around with her in the middle of the night. It was the only way we could settle her.
McDonald's had a 24hr drive thru nearby, their coffee became a lifesaver.
