Anyone help with this rash? Hives maybe?

Little DS2 17 months is not having a great time.

He had a fever last week, lasted 2-3 days. No other symptoms apart from not eating. Seemed happy in himself so no doctor trip.

Fever gone, but not really back to himself and still not eating much. Is breastfeeding more though.

As I'm feeding him this afternoon, he's fallen asleep and his legs are coming up in these weird spots. Soon as he's awake will phone the doctor, but anyone recognise these? They look a bit like hives to me, but he's not eaten anything to be allergic too. Unless it's this virus still.

Attached a pic.

TIA x

Looks like ringworm to me.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/07/2017 17:30

Hmmmm maybe not on closed inspection.

gluteustothemaximus · 10/07/2017 17:32

I did wonder about ringworm too. He's got them starting to appear on arms and lower legs now. Some are just on their own, some have joined up like the picture.

Have you given him Piriton?

gluteustothemaximus · 10/07/2017 17:37

No piriton in the house. Will go and get some when he's awake.

I'd wake him and go asap personally in case it get worse and spreads to his mouth/ lips.

Thingywhatsit · 10/07/2017 17:38

I would say hives - but I could be wrong. Do you any piriton in the house? Have they spread anymore?

I remember waking up one morning when dd was about 18 months and whilst changing her nappy found her torso, arms and legs absolutely covered. Didn't realise they were hives at the time and panicked and went straight to a&e - by time we saw the dr I felt like a fool as they had calmed down. I got the "time wasting" lecture!

gluteustothemaximus · 10/07/2017 17:41

Thanks Dame, what do you think it might be? Tesco pharmacy is open till 8pm so think will take him there.

Thingywhatsit · 10/07/2017 17:42

Should add - do go see a dr/pharmacist - even if it's just for your peace of mind. 17 months is young and they can't tell you what's wrong!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/07/2017 17:44

Looks hivey, but if it's spreading then Piriton is in order.

What's he eaten?

Allergy to washing powder/ conditioner?

Viral?

gluteustothemaximus · 10/07/2017 17:46

TBH thingy, I would have probably panicked if the rash had appeared with the fever!

Not spread any more since. Arghh. Don't really want to wake him. He's hardly slept lately, and typically he's very peaceful now.

With heatwave no clothes except nappy, and hardly eating except milk. Must be viral. He's woken up, feeding again, and will pop him in buggy for a trip to pharmacy after.

Hives. Quite common as part of a viral infection. One of mine had loads of hives as a toddler and after a cold etc would get them in extreme cold or heat (e.g. winter day or hot bath).

gluteustothemaximus · 10/07/2017 17:57

That's interesting ontop, as with the heat we're having, I wonder if that contributed. Least the general consensus is nothing nasty, and they should go with piriton, and a pharmacy trip instead of GP [Phew emoji]

Probably is do with some sort of virus - poor little fella! Still worrying for you. Good sign he is feeding. Is it hot with you today? It is cooler where I am

Our severe reaction was cos of stuff they had sprayed on neighbouring fields where we lived and it had travelled into the garden! Took us quite a while to work out why she kept getting hives and nothing else was wrong!

babybels · 10/07/2017 18:01

They do look like hives. Some kids take a while to respond to the antihistamine and it might be a few hours before they calm down. My son had similar but all over and on his eye lids and lips and it took ages for the antihistamine to start working we and almost ended up in hospital. Luckily my GP kept us at the surgery for observation for a few hours and eventually after 2 different types of antihistamine it calmed down.
Good luck. If it doesn't calm down after piriton then a call to 111 might be needed.

PumpkinSpiceEverything · 10/07/2017 18:15

Definitely ringworm.

Emma2803 · 10/07/2017 18:53

I would have thought ringworm too to be honest though harder to tell the texture of the rash and a bit strange on a baby as to where they would have caught it (unless they are at nursery so you wouldn't know everyone they are in contact with)

It could also be a viral rash which is common in children and will clear up on its own as the virus clears from the system.

Poor little mite, hope it's not annoying him too much. And also if it's not annoying him it's unlikely to be hives or ringworm as they would be itchy whereas the viral rash would most likely go unnoticed by him

Thingywhatsit · 10/07/2017 21:42

Hope all is ok op xxx

gluteustothemaximus · 10/07/2017 21:56

Pharmacist said to take Piriton, agreed it could be hives, to do with virus.

Bizarrely by the time we got back, they had started to clear up (without the piriton) Confused

He's still not really himself. Will keep an eye on his little body for any more blobs.

Thank you so much for all the replies Smile

PowerPantsRule · 11/07/2017 16:01

We had this....viruses can bring on hives. Don't be surprised if they come back and keep coming back on and off for a week. Just treat with antihistamines...

ragged · 11/07/2017 21:24

I dunno about hives but look a lot like flea bits to me. Not usually so clustered, but another insect bite possible, too. That would fit with fading within a few hrs.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/07/2017 21:55

Flea bites don't fade within a few hours. They aren't flea bites.

ragged · 12/07/2017 18:35

Mine used to fade in a few hours. I grew up in flea infested houses & the bites (if I didn't get the flea off quick) always looked like OP's pic when I was a kid (am mildly allergic). Except not so clustered.

Now fleas make me have small red dots that itch for a week. Which is actually more of a nuisance than the welts like OP's kids had.

Cat fleas, to be specific.
