What foods to wean 17 week old on

So after a long discussion with my HV about my DS, we've decided to wean my DS at 17 weeks. He's currently 14 & eating in excess of what even a 9 month old should have. He is ALWAYS hungry!

What's the best foods to start with, do I drop a feed or carry on as normal??

Why are you only giving 3-4oz bottles at that age, especially when he's crying for another one right after? The recommended amount for that age is 6oz per feed I believe?

I would make up 7 or 8oz bottles for a 4 month old
No wonder he's crying!! Confused

Sorry I'm a bit confused how many ounces is he having in a feed? If he's on full bottles (8 or 9oz if I remember correctly), then yes weaning at 17 weeks is probably appropriate.
I weaned ds at 17 weeks, we started on single fruit and veg purées, and baby porridge (wheat free). Annabel Karmel does a great weaning book which was basically our bible!

My ds cried and fed what felt like continuously until he was diagnosed with dairy allergy. He sounded like a wounded animal and would throw himself about the bed or floor. It was awful to watch.

Could you try increasing the size of his bottles? Just try adding a little each time and encouraging him to take a little more each time. If he drank more in one sitting he may naturally be satiated for longer. If you are weaning with medical advice and are set on that route I would aim for porridge made with formula, maybe just a small amount once a day to start with.

The best thing to do would be to get back in touch with your HV. In my area they offer weaning workshops at the children's centres, could you call your local one and ask if this is something they offer?

My DC3 us 6 months old, takes 5/6oz every 2 hours in the daytime, roughly 35-40oz a day. That is as well as breakfast and dinner. Replacing milk with fruit anf veg won't help I'm afraid if hunger is the issue.

When my ds was that age he was on 35 Oz milk a day. A 9 month old will be meant to be taking less milk as they will be on solids too.
What size of teats are you using? Could be too small for the thicker milk making it harder to come out?
I would also try offering bigger bottles 5/6Oz. Do it first thing so dc is hungrier.
You haven't mentioned if your dc has reflux or cmpa? Do you have a dietitian?

Weaning my DS only increased his milk intake, he still drinks absolutely loads of milk now (just turned 1). Weaning is hard work, I'd put it off until you absolutely have to and just carry on with the milk.

This goes against all advice so they should have told you what to give them. Their digestive system isn't fully functioning so you can set them up for later problems. Perhaps speak to an actual doctor for advice before you listen to random internet people.

If you're weaning to make things easier, it's so much harder than milk.

You've got to make all the food. At 4 months a baby won't even be close to feeding himself, so you'll need to get highchair out, sit and spoon feed-it might take ages. Then there's all the mess-cleaning it all up, cleaning baby, etc.
It's a nightmare when you go out, having to take food with you, find somewhere to sit and heat it up. You'll still be having to make and take bottles so it's double the work.

At 6 months, it's far easier as baby can eat anything so you can give what you have and won't have to make separate/puréed foods.

Do you mean your baby is feeding little and often? This is what he 'should' be doing. This is what babies are designed to do. Don't forget, it's summer too so he'll be making sure he drinks lots. Think how often you go without any food or drink passing your lips, even a sip of water.

My DS had severe reflux & took very small volumes, and would be sick with larger amounts - the most he ever took was 80/90mls (3-4oz), but this was a special high calorie milk so less volume was needed.

My DD was a very good feeder but never took more than 6/7oz, even in the run up to weaning.

We should also remember that it's only been in the last decade or so that later weaning at 26 weeks has been recommended- it was 12 weeks about 20 years ago & 17 weeks about 10 years ago.

The OP has said this has been advised by her HV. Admittedly I found my HV totally useless but they are supposed to be trained professionals! Op I would meet with your HV again and they will advise you on what to start with. Normally baby rice and porridge. Keep pushing the milk though, as this is still the main source of food until 12 months.

Baby milk mixed with baby rice.
