Worried my daughter is overweight.

My DD is two next week! She has her two year check tomorrow and tonight I thought I'd weigh and message her height.

She was 12.4kg (around 27 pounds) which puts her on the 75th percentile which didn't seem too bad as that's what she's been on since birth.

I measured her height and she was only 80cm which apparently puts her on the 2nd percentile. She was on the 75th at birth and again at about 6 months.

I did her BMI on the NHS page and it tells me she is deemed very overweight.

I've never really considered her overweight. She is chunky but not fat. She's in the right size or smaller clothes for her age. Also, she was very late to walk so she hasn't slimmed down after that yet!

advice?

My sisters little boy was a chubby baby, he is almost 3 now. Last summer he just shit up over the summer and slimmed down. I don't know if it's true or not that it depends on the weight of the parents throughout their life, not sure on that one

*....he just shit up over summer...Grin .

Obviously upping exercise would be a good start.

What is a typical days food? I think rather than worrying about weight perhaps just see if there is any hidden unnecessary stuff on her diet that could be cut out without being missed.

My dd used to go through very visible growth spurts. She would look chunky for a fortnight or so then a month later would be a god few inches taller and back to lean. It was interesting tk watch!

My dd1 had her two year check recently and she was 25th centile for height and I think 91st for weight. She comes out as overweight on that bmi think. The HV wasn't worried really, she just said try reducing portion sizes and offering small amounts first and trying semi skimmed milk. To be honest I didn't bother with the latter as I prefer full fat and she doesn't have much milk anyway. I am trying to be firm on sugary treats and trying to get her to eat more veg (not easy!!) but I'm also not too worried as she fits easily in to 2-3 clothes and is pretty active. She does also have good concentration so happy to sit and draw/paint/bake/read books/play with the iPad (also trying to limit screen time). Basically I wouldn't worry too much but keep an eye on things, try not to offer sugary foods and try to increase activity as much as possibe. I think you'd know if your dd was actually fat and unhealthy.

Shot up, shot up, sorry Blush

Maybe you measured her height inaccurately? It seems a bit surprising if she's gone from 75th to 2nd percentile?

Shootingstar2289 · 03/07/2017 20:19

Thanks all! She has a good diet, or so I thought. Will eat pretty much anything but we are are careful for her not to eat too much.

She certainly doesn't look fat. Still has some of her baby fat. In all honesty, she only started walking a month ago (believed to have hypermobility) so she hasn't lost the baby fat that other toddlers and early walkers would have. I'm hoping she will be a confident runner soon and she will definitely be getting more exercise!

I am thinking that too Pickerel. But to be on the 75th percentile for height she had to be around 88cm if I remember right. She is definitely not that tall! Hoping the HV will give a more accurate height tomorrow! 👍

I've just looked in my DS's red book, he was about 29 pounds and 84cm tall at 2. Which put him on the 91st for weight and the 9th for height ... but now at 6, he's evened out lol.

My eldest daughter 10 is very slim definitely inherited from her dad but we were looking at photos the other day of her as a toddler and she asked "Who is that chubby kid?"

I laughed and said her, she was genuinely shocked.

From my experience most children go through a slightly heavyset phase then they start with the growth spurts and it all evens out.

As your daughter isn't noticeably fat then she's probably just fine, BMI is only a guide. My youngest has concrete feet (or something else bloody heavy going on in her body) and always skews the charts but is perfectly sized according to HV.

BuzzKillington · 03/07/2017 20:53

My first was hugely fat.

9lb3 at birth on 75th centile - he was soon up to 91st, ebf and as fat as a sumo wrestler.

He was slow to walk and only bum shuffled, possibly because he was so heavy.

By the time he was 3, he started to slim down.

Cranb0rne · 04/07/2017 15:36

I may be wrong, but I read that measuring BMI in children is very misleading and a lot of kids will appear to have a large BMI when they're perfectly normal.

Shootingstar2289 · 05/07/2017 19:53

Thanks all. HV wasn't even bothered about weighing her (so she must not look overweight). I asked if she could weigh her as it would be interesting to know. She was 26 pound something and was between the 50th and the 75th percentile and she was 82cm tall which put her on the 9th. HV worth visitor didn't even manage it! 👍😊

Is she shorter than her peers? Really difficult to accurately measure height, unless she is noticeably shorter I wouldn't worry

annlee3817 · 08/07/2017 07:50

If she's only recently started walking I really wouldn't worry. My dd was chunky but after about six months or more of walking she completely changed and her weight gain slowed right down
