What time do your 8 - 10 year old go to bed on a school night?

After a heated discussion with DH, I wanted to get a better sense of what is normal.
So, we have 2 DS age 8 and 10. In the last year or so they have been going to bed a lot later than they used to. Realistically they are not asleep before 9 pm (DS2) or 9.30 (DS1 goes to bed at same time but takes longer to go to sleep). DH feels they should be asleep by 8, but evening activities (cubs, football cricket etc) make that difficult. Plus I like to read them long stories (to me that is an essential part of bedtime and DSs would hate to go to bed without stories).
So, what time do your KS2 kids actually go to sleep?

my 8 year old goes to bed at 9pm and sleeps until 7.30am - that's a good 10 hours plus.

If you have a look on the NHS website they list what a child should be sleeping by age. I think at 8 it's 10 hours 15mins, so 9pm bedtime for 7.30am start should be fine.

Sounds the same as my 8 and 10 year olds. Rarely in bed and asleep before 9/9.30. Dh tried earlier tonight but "life" (finding out we could link DD singing at an event today from lap top to actual TV 😂) took over and yet again it was 9 before they got into bed!

DD is 9. It used to be 8:30 bedtime, 9pm lights out. But to achieve that, it's upstairs to get ready at 8pm. With some of her clubs not finishing until 7:30 and her needing tea, there are days where that slips especially in the summer.

She can wake any time from 7am to 8am though - the latter usually when I'm in an almighty hurry!

SurvivalOfTheUnfittest · 02/07/2017 23:20

We now do a lot of activities on school evenings. Ds1 is 9 and ds2 is 7. On non-club nights, they have story and bed by 7:45 (ds2) and 8pm (ds1). On club nights, I don't read stories so it is lights out by 8:15-30. They wake at 6:30 no matter what!

booellesmum · 02/07/2017 23:21

When mine were 8 it was around 9.00.
By 10 around 9.30.
The 12 year old now goes up at around 10.15.

RudeDog · 02/07/2017 23:21

8:30 - 9:30 - DD8, I find I can't make her sleep more these days - the earlier she goes to bed the earlier she gets up!
Bit later now because of light evenings

AdalindSchade · 02/07/2017 23:22

Lights out at 9 for my almost 9 year old. It hasn't been 8 since he was 6. There would be absolutely no point in me trying, he wouldn't go to sleep. Your dh is being unrealistic.

Imaginosity · 02/07/2017 23:24

My 5 year old has been falling asleep at 9.30 die to the bright evenings. My 7 year old is usually asleep by 10. Both are up at 7.30. They don't need more sleep - both are alert and happy during the day and doing well in school. Do your children seem tired?

Adelie0404 · 02/07/2017 23:25

my 8 year old goes at 8 and my 13 year old at 930. They both get tired if go later and don't wake up for school. 0645 for 13 year old, so early. All children are different.
In fact I've noticed the thing about children falling asleep in cars - its always the teenager these days.

aleC4 · 02/07/2017 23:28

My 10 year old goes at 8.30 on night's at home but has a hobby that finishes at 8 one night and 9.30 another so those nights are later.
My 12 year old goes when he wants as he's sensible about the decision - anytime between 9 and 10 usually.
They both have to be up before 6.30 though.

MeanAger · 02/07/2017 23:30

On scout nights it is usually 9pm before he (8) is in bed. On nights where there are no evening activities I try to get him up to bed by half 7/8pm. He is night owl though and will often still be awake after 11.

MrsABrown72 · 02/07/2017 23:30

lights out at 9 for my 7 and a half year old in the summer due to the light and finding it difficult to fit everything in. Tonight we did a BBQ at 7 then shower and reading and some down time after being out at park and then playing in garden. Doesn't seem to need more sleep and she will be up at 7.30.
Will try and get her maybe once a week in bed for 8 (mainly for my benefit!!)

sahbear · 03/07/2017 06:47

Thanks for the useful replies. The thing is that DS1 is tired so that is DHs argument, but he's always been tired even when he used to go to bed at 7. He wears out easy and has had blood tests etc but nothing wrong. Even if he goes to bed early he won't go straight to sleep so seems a waste of time. Thanks for the useful feedback.

They get up at 6-6.30 regardless but in bed for 8, lights out by 8.30.

happymumof4crazykids · 03/07/2017 07:07

At that age my eldest 2 were in bed by 8 at the latest! Now at 13 and 11 they are asleep by 9.30 as up at 6.30. Weekends is bed at 11 up whenever they wake up! Am I being a bit horrid sending them to bed so early?

Dreamstosell · 03/07/2017 07:38

I think that's fine Happy. One of my 13 year olds is the same. Well light off usually 9 - 9.15. Struggles to get up at 7.15. But he takes a while to get to sleep. Other 13 year old in bed 8.30 and still has to be wakened in the morning (due to his special needs he doesn't realise this is earlier than other kids his age so I can do what's best for him!)

Thingvellir · 03/07/2017 08:25

DD9 goes up at 8.15 and lights off 8.45, asleep by nine. She wakes at 6-6.30 regardless of bedtime. She's not tired though, she's clearly getting enough sleep. DS 6 has lights off at around 8.15

BertieBotts · 03/07/2017 08:32

8.30 for DS who is 8. Sometimes he falls straight to sleep and sometimes he stays awake. I think I need to fiddle with his alarm because he used to wake up well and now I have to wake him up and he's grumpy.

Eolian · 03/07/2017 08:33

Ds is 9. He goes to bed at 8. Lights out at 8.30 ish.

Finola1step · 03/07/2017 08:38

It really does depend on what time they need to be up in the mornings. Mine can stay in bed to 7:30-7:45. So a 9pm bedtime is fine. Bit if they had to be up at 6, I would adjust accordingly.
