Moses basket not essential, put mine straight in cot. Grobags great though.
buggy/pram
baby monitor if house big or walls thick

ledodgy · 22/03/2007 12:50

Breast pads

Tortington · 22/03/2007 12:55

get one of those cots where the side comes right down so you can bring it right to the bed - you dont have to leave the warm comfort of your own bed in order to sooth horrible crying baby.

bottle warmer and mini fridge for bedroom. - why plod downstairs 4 times a night.

baby bath stuff - but personally i wouldnt bother but a first time mum will - i think in the bath with you or in the sink or baby wipes is fine. i think first time parents get overly anal about bathing. i wouldnt buy a bath - but she might want one!

Baby monitor is invaluable. Ditch the moses basket, look pretty but hardly used it and thought it was very comfy for them in any case.

TenaLady · 22/03/2007 13:00

Sorry, easier to say what to avoid Baby baths cos you cant empty the water easily and you break your back trying to support babe in baby bath within the bath cos of restricted movement.

Camera
Nipple cream
Big old soft pants
Nappy bags (for maternity pads too)
5x more nappies and cotton wool than you think you could possibly ever use in the first week

dingolimpet · 22/03/2007 15:59

Don't know about anyone else, but the thing I found brilliant were the little plastic collecting devices you put in one side of your bra when your feeding, and the milk collects in the other side, i saved loads of milk this way, and stop you making a mess everywhere. You can get them from Boots.

I second custy, there's no need to bath a baby every day. just wash their bum under the tap.

sunnyjim · 22/03/2007 21:56

carrycot not a moses basket - one that will last until baby is a couple of months old. We then put DS in his carry cost inside his bi cot to get used to it.
Any blankets will do - DS likes soft fleecy ones as they are more snuggly
Swaddling cloths/wraps - saved our sanity
monitor
plenty of bottles in two sizes 4oz and 8oz
Grobag for when baby can get out of swaddle
baby sling/carier - I liked the tomy one
A REALLY good pram, as lightweight as you can get it, dont' underestimate how much you walk with a baby!
terry toweling squares - not for nappies too much faff but better even than muslins for mopping up sick
A list of babysitters
earplugs
DVD rental - whether breast or bottle babies spend alot of time drining and you may as well watch something for that half our 8 times a day!
Tmmuy tub for bathtimes - DS loved it and theres no backache and less risk of drowning! keeps them much warmer too

get a bath support from jojomaman bebe. Best recommendation ever. You don't have to worry about lo slipping and you have hands free. Best £12 ever spent!
