Teething - what worked for you?

DD is almost 4 months and has been showing signs of teething for a couple of weeks now (chewing hands, dribbling etc) but it has really ramped up this week. Cheeks are flushed and pretty much constant crying in the evenings. She can only be soothed when she's got mine or DP's fingers in her mouth.

We've tried teething dummys and toys but she doesn't really get on with those. As for pain relief we've been keeping on top of Calpol but was wondering if anyone found any other things useful? Powders, gels etc. If so which ones?

Nelsons Teething Powder was like magic dust in this house, but youngest is now 10 so not sure if they make it anymore.

You could try a muslin dipped in previously boiled water( whilst it's at a warmish temp)

I think warm temp helps sore gums rather than icy cold

My DD likes Sophie the giraffe to chew on (my ds didn't like it at all though). We used dentinox teething liquid, which seems quite effective. TBH, nothing is particularly effective at the stage when they're cutting through.

Dentinox gel helped for us, Sophie the giraffe and a teething toy called match stick monkey. Ashton and parsons teething power worked when my DS was younger (now 8.5 months) so probably until he was around 6 months then we needed stronger stuff like the gel and calpul.

Teething seems never ending for us!!

TittyGolightly · 27/06/2017 21:50

Not nelsons (it's just sugar) but Ashton and parsons powders are wonderful. All powders work because the sweetness distracts from the pain and the grittiness makes them bump their gums together which is soothing. A+P are the only ones to contain actual camomile extract, which is calming. Highly recommend them.

TittyGolightly · 27/06/2017 21:51

Gel is crap - it slides off the gums and numbs their tongue instead. Anbesol numbs where it touches instantly.

Belle1409 · 27/06/2017 21:51

Anbesol Liquid is also supposed to be good, you have to get it over the counter though.

RibenaMonsoon · 27/06/2017 21:57

Teething gels and power did nothing. Calpol helped, also we bought a couple of amazing things from Amazon which where and are still my saving graces.

These lollies have massive handles so baby can grab and use easily. If you haven't weaned yet you can use baby's milk in there to make milk lollies as well.

This will only be useful once you wean baby. Plastic nibbler with holes in. I put cold apple pieces in. It's great for baby to chew, get the taste of the fruit without worrying about choking. Cold refrigerated or even frozen fruit in it really help with teething pain.

I hope it gets better for you. Teething sucks!

Anbesol is great. We used to put teething toys (the water filled ones) and wet flannels in the fridge and let them chew on them.

AceholeRimmer · 27/06/2017 22:03

Watching with interest.. my 4 month old is suffering to much at the mo! Alternating calpol and nurofen works well some of the time, along with bonjela or calgel to rub on gums. But sometimes falling asleep due to being so exhausted is the only thing stops it.

princesseggo · 28/06/2017 11:46

Thank you so much for your replies everyone! Will definitely try out the A+P teething powder and anbesol!
I've got my eye on Sophie the Giraffe too Smile

Super cold rags to chew on while you hold them and lots of wine for you.

Heirhelp · 29/06/2017 08:04

Iburofen is wetter than calpol for teething but you can use both if necessary. Anbesol liquid bought over the chemist counter is great too and can be used the same time as ibuprofen and calpol.

ChildishGambino · 02/07/2017 11:27

They still do nelsons and they're awesome. We also have this chew filled with water that you can put in the fridge. DD loves it.

TittyGolightly · 02/07/2017 12:27

Unless you don't want to fund woo.

ChildishGambino · 02/07/2017 12:42

What does fund woo mean?

TittyGolightly · 02/07/2017 12:50

Nelsons peddle homeopathic remedies, i.e. sugar pills based on complete woo. They're not seeing a single penny of my money, ever.

paulankagilmore · 02/07/2017 12:53

Ashton & Parsons (aka baby crack), ibuprofen, lots of cold teething rings. Gin for me.

welshweasel · 02/07/2017 13:04

Calpol, nurofen, dentinox, teether toys that you can put in the freezer.

Don't waste your money on homeopathic nonsense. You're better off giving them a spoonful of sugar to chew on (am not actually recommending that you do...)

TittyGolightly · 02/07/2017 13:05

Ashton and parsons aren't homeopathic. They're brilliant.

welshweasel · 02/07/2017 13:11

I was referring to the nelsons powders, sorry!
