Baffled mum regards to school uniform policy

So my 5 yr old daughter asked me if she could have some shorts for school as shes been practicing handstands cartwheels etc and says skirt gets in the way and she doesnt like flashing her underwear i said shouldn't be a problem but i will ask the school just to be sure. Yesterday i phoned the school reception and asked the question to my slight shock i was given the reply girls in skirts and dresses during summer only.... i them asked what about a gigham playsuit and again was told no, but after seeing the news yesterday evening regards to the class of boys turning up to school in skirts to protest not being aloud to wear shorts during these hot summer days i wonder should i send her in shorts anyway who says girls shouldn't be aloud its not really a problem I don't think. I had a read of the schools gender equality policies i would like to see a copy of the uniform policy to see if they match up or are conflicting of each other. What are your thought's would you send your daughter in them anyway?

Mine always wore shorts under dress anyway

Sirzy · 23/06/2017 10:52

If she is comfier wearing shorts I wokld send her in them. A few girls at ds school wear shorts and polo shirt rather than dresses in summer

MacarenaFerreiro · 23/06/2017 10:52

Some of the girls in my youngest child's class have worn shorts in the past - but proper tailored shorts in grey/black, not the stretchy cycling shorts type.

Quite a few girls in DS school either wear shorts or the gingham playsuits. They also wear trousers in the winter if they want to.

MurielsBottom · 23/06/2017 11:08

My daughter has both the gingham summer dresses and the smart, tailored shorts which she wears with the school polo shirt. Both are acceptable at our school. It does sound ridiculous in this day and age to specify that girls can only wear dresses.

Cocobing29 · 23/06/2017 11:13

I think that surely the school have to respect her wishes, its not like im going to send her in hotpants i am going to get her some grey tailored shorts from next. Will they tell her off for going i don't want her to be singled out for coming in them but i want her to be comfortable and its too hot for tights or trousers

They won't be able to stop her wearing proper school shorts i.e. tailored ones. Maybe receptionist was picturing sports shorts etc. Just send her in with them or cullotes?

Cocobing29 · 23/06/2017 11:15

Oh no looneytine253 i specifically said grey girls tailored shorts 😏

Clearly the mistake you made there was asking permission. Just do it!

Cocobing29 · 23/06/2017 11:35

Just do it.

At my son's school when we were devising the uniform policy we deliberately made it non-sex specified. So there is one list of uniform, including gingham dresses, shorts, cardigans, sweatshirts for all and it's up to the child and parents/carers to decide which they feel comfortable in.
