Cloth nappies from birth

I cloth nappie-d my son from 8 weeks to 18 months ish (massively heavy wetter), and now I'm hoping to cloth nappy DS2 from birth. Hoping to not buy much in newborn size as they'll only be used for a few weeks. From DS I have mainly One Size pockets, which are faaaaar too big for a newborn.

My plan is to mainly use terries with Little Lamb wraps (absolutely loved these, lovely slim fit). I will obviously get a totsbots teenyfit in 'Birthday', and maybe some christmassy teenyfits because they're adorable. But mainly flats and wraps. Does that sounds like a good plan? What about nighttimes? Used bamboozles but think they'll be massive?

Also any tips on using prefolds would be fab, I have some newborn size but only ever used the for boosting. They seem a bit small to use in the same way as terries?

Any fab newborn nappies I'm not aware of? Like I say not hugely keen on buying lots of sized nappies because he'll grow out of them quickly.

Thanks! So excited!

Also! In the hospital! I am having a c section so who knows how long I'll stay in... hopefully 24 hours but maybe up to 3 days? I guess I'll just take a big ole wet bag with me?

I didn't start cloth bumming till I came out of hospital after my section.

Looking after DS1 at home and washing clothes for both me and the baby and visiting lots seemed enough to ask him to do.

And we were in a week in the end.

I used cloth nappies from birth but I have no idea what these things are you speak of. I used gold for all 3 of mine, nappy liners and rubber knickers.

This was in the 90's so we just had the different quality of terry to choose from.

We cloth bummed from birth and now I run a nappy library. You may want to investigate hiring a newborn kit from your local library if you have one. Close do newborn popins which are gorgeous...

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 22/06/2017 19:12

Missed your second post. I was in for 3 days and used a mixture of muslins and wraps/fitteds and wraps. We had 3 wetbags and DH took one home each night.

Pickleshickles · 22/06/2017 19:16

Second hand ones from eBay are a good bet.

GherkinSnatch · 22/06/2017 19:17

I found pop-ins so much better than totsbots - far more absorbent if you get the bamboo ones. Super cute designs too.

For the first couple of days you should be fine with muslins and wraps - cheap and easy to store in a wetbag while you're in hospital.

NotCitrus · 22/06/2017 19:20

I used cloth as soon as the meconium was gone - had two Smartnappies and used a few muslins but then Motherease could be made small enough. Just get some second hand random ones.

Prefolds pad folded under a newborn bambino mio wrap got us through the early days. He's 4 months now but as his sister is still using the one size nappies we bought him some little lambs size 1.

Cant comment on c section, been out same day for both mine. I took a travel wet bag only.

Main advice, be kind to yourself, and get the right size disposable for when the leg leaks are coming thick and fast and the kid has exploded over your best wraps.

Joffmognum · 23/06/2017 00:32

It might be easier to use disposables for your hospital stay, just so your visitors don't have to take them home, and unless you have a private room other patients won't appreciate a 3 day full wet bag! Even if newborn poo doesn't smell that bad it will in another heatwave

However, if your visitors support taking a wetbag home or if you trust it won't smell then that's different. I personally used disposables, I did feel a bit guilty though.

ExtraPineappleExtraHam · 23/06/2017 00:33

I got some great secondhand smart nappies from Mothercare, even had a hole for the umbilical cord doodah. Loved them, it was a wrap with a prefold but extra extra tiny. Now ds he is in LL wraps and bamboos and we really like them. I've had to stop cloth with his older sis as she gets terrible nappy rash but hope to continue with him.

Joffmognum · 23/06/2017 00:36

By the way I used one size nappies on my 8lb newborn, they were fine. Looked a bit silly but still did the job, I used a mix of bambino mios and older style totspots (secondhand) so they weren't anything special

BendydickCuminsnatch · 23/06/2017 07:00

unless you have a private room other patients won't appreciate a 3 day full wet bag! True, didn't think of that! How selfish of me.

DS isn't due til Nov so hopefully no heat wave! DS1 was a boiling May day, phew!

OK I will look up the Mothercare Smart Nappies, never heard of them.

So you can just pad a prefold (or muslin) and have it 'loose' under a wrap, no nappy nipper or anything? That sounds easy. I will look up the other wraps, Little Lamb are my fave though as they fit so snugly. I do have some Motherease ones but they're sooooo voluminous.

I did use Birth To Potty ones on DS when he was 8 weeks (2nd centile for weight by then sadly) and didn't have any leaks but they did look pretty silly!

You can nippa a muslin if your wraps aren't tight on the legs.

vivavivaviva · 23/06/2017 12:11

Yup, if baby isn't moving then the pad folded prefold stays where you left it! Under a decent wrap you're good to go.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 27/06/2017 12:23

Fab! I might be sorted then! Thanks for the tips!

I loved size one little lambs (bamboo) under a wrap from day 1 (as soon as we were out of hospital post Caesarean).
Second hand you can get them for £2.50 each. They're brilliant!

Enb76 · 27/06/2017 12:30

I'm another who used muslins under a wrap (after emergency C) and then went on to terries and wraps. The branded stuff looked lovely but they were really expensive and I still use the terries for day to day cleaning 8 years on.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 27/06/2017 13:02

Oh and yes please what did you all use for nighttimes? I think I changed newborn DS' disposable nappy every wakeup which was unnecessary Grin

OP posts:
Nan0second · 27/06/2017 15:21

Size one little lambs at night too!
Muslins and prefolds just leaked with my heavy wetting newborn.
Overnight I just changed at the 11pm ish feed and then if there was poo overnight (which there often was with every feed at the start!)

GherkinSnatch · 27/06/2017 16:09

Little lamb sized 2 part nappies are bomb proof. Take an age to dry though.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 27/06/2017 16:44

Gherkin yes I think I'll have to get out the heated airer and dehumidifier again Grin dehumidifier really speeds up drying IME. We didn't have a tumble dryer til recently - can you tumble bamboo and hemp? I don't remember.

Think I'll get some LL fitteds.

OP posts:
Nan0second · 27/06/2017 22:20

Can tumble bamboo and hemp on low :)

BendydickCuminsnatch · 28/06/2017 10:40

Thanks! That will be handy :)
