If he's too little to actually wee and poo ON the potty, he's still little enough to need a nappy?

He will not wear a nappy. If I manage to get one on him he rips it off. However, he is not yet ready to go on the potty (I know this as I am forever following him around with the potty or mopping up mess from the carpet)

It is starting to drive me mad.

Pleeeeeeease help?

tia

vests that button underneath him

gaffer tape

Is he in washables or disposables? washables are much harder to get off IMO . If in disposables then try putting a poppered wrap over the top.

Put him in poppered vests and dungarees - reduce access

Ah. Suspected it was going to be one of those problems.

Bugger.

Thanks anyway

Have you tried Pull Ups. He can still rip them off, but at least they look like Daddy's jocks. Rx

fryalot · 21/03/2007 08:50

He's in disposables. If I dress him in clothes he CANNOT get out of, he struggles and cries, and shouts and screams. It seems quite cruel to keep him dressed in a way. Do you think I should keep him dressed no matter what?

Rosiemac - tried pullups - he takes them off. Bought him some underpants yesterday, I know he's too young, but I thought that they would contain the worst of the mess and he might feel all grown up in them.

He won't wear them. Even the very cute thomas the tank engine ones.

Difficult one - but as you say, the frequency of accidents etc suggests not that he wants to learn how to wee/poo in a potty, just that he doesn't want to wear a nappy - and the two need to go hand in hand IME!!!

I think you might just have to prevent him from taking his nappy off for now. Has he been like this for long? Do you think it's a phase he will grow out of? Sounds like he just likes to leave it all flapping in the wind ... not terribly practical when you need to go round Sainsbury's ...

fryalot · 21/03/2007 08:57

I think he's trying to copy his sister - she's 14 months older than him and uses the potty fine. She went through a stage of wanting to be naked all the time (very embarrassing episode in morrisons car park whilst I was strapping ds into car seat.... anyway) she now wants to wear nothing but dora pyjamas - but at least she is clothed, ds won't wear anything. I can just about get him dressed if we are going out but the instant we are back in the house, everything gets ripped off.

Aha... that explains a lot then!!

I don't know squonk - tbh I think the best thing to do is to decide on a path to go down then stick to it - so if you decide that he must wear clothes and not take his nappy off, then insist that he is clothed and nappied all the time except for bathtime (maybe let him have a trot round in the bathroom naked before he gets in the bath, so he gets a little bit of nuddy time?)

OR - let him carry on re the taking clothes off and try and potty train him asap. Whichever you do, though, be consistent, so he knows where he stands. I wouldn't worry about being fair/unfair - he will soon get the idea that the rules for him are different to those for his sister (eg I daresay he is in a highchair and she sits on a chair, different bedtimes etc - children accept these things). HTH - bit muddled, sorry

Thanks, miaou - I think I'll go down the line of chasing him around with a potty. Look out for the new thread entitled "Anyone know how to get poo out of carpet?"

LOL!!

fryalot · 21/03/2007 09:47

So, he just weed on the floor.

Then went and put the potty on his head.

I think, unless you're happy to stay in the house till he is big enough to potty train, that you are just going to have to let him complain whilst he's in clothes

fryalot · 21/03/2007 09:59

yeah, I think you're right

My ds is 19months and is doing exactly the same. loves having his nappy off and running around. It started recently as he got really bad nappy rash so I had to let him run around to try nd get rid of it. Now he doesnt want to put it back on. We have had some luck with the toilet and a padded seat but not much. Will not sit on any type of potty, just says 'no!no!' if I try to get him to sit on it.

I have been letting him run around at certain times of the day. So in the morning after he has done his wees and poos in his nappy, I get him up and let him run around without a nappy on until he has his nap when I put a nappy on with the promise of tv before his nap if he is good (does that make me a bad mum?!). Then in the afternoon I try to take him out which seems to distract him and let him run around without til tea time (althoug there have been most accidents then including a poo on the sofa while he was looking out of the window and I was bf dd2!)

Guess there is no answer and I have become pretty sick of all the kicks in the ribs at nappy changing time. Not good esp after a cs!

He does seem to be getting better at knowing when he needs to do a wee, and I did read that if they see themselves weeing after they get the feeling then they start to associate it with needing to go iyswim! Not much help but I thought it might make you feel better to know tha tsomeone else is going through the same?

fryalot · 21/03/2007 12:32

thanks, dragonhart. It's good to know that other people's children are liking/disliking the same things. He does like the potty though, just not to wee/poo in.

He likes it as a hat, as a chair, as a stool for climbing up, as a depository for his toys.....
