Hi I use a mixture of disposables (Nature babies ones, not that often cos expensive), Tots Bots rainbows, and a Bambino Mio wrap with folded terry squares inside.... And dd has nappy rash quite often. I also air her bum almost every morning for at least an hour while she has a roll about (and pee!) on the floor. I change her every 2 - 4 hours and she's usually soaked. I use bottom butter from Waitrose or Weleda's calendula nappy cream or zinc and castor oil stuff from Boots. Nothing works! I have also tried Sudocream and Bepanthan. What am I doing wrong???
Would fleece liners help keep wee off more?? Or some bamboo boosters maybe?
I feel so bad cos it looks really sore and I am trying everything but can't seem to get rid of it

Oooooh fleece liners are an absolute must IMO as they draw the wetness away from the skin...but make your own, it is much more economical!

Did you see the other recent thread? Someone suggested painting with egg white is a traditional remedy for a really sore bum.

PestoMonster · 20/03/2007 21:42

That was me Washersaurus. My dd had nappy rash that was so severe the skin was red raw & exposed and none of the usual remedies would solve it. My HV told me to leave off the nappy as much as poss and to paint her bottom with egg white. It seals it and I think it is the enzymes in it that heals it. Anyway, it worked!! Apparently it was a well known remedy until the salmonella scare started and after that HVs were no longer officially allowed to recommend it. Good luck!

My DD suffered from awful nappy rash, she would cry and shake when changing her nappy and nothing seemed to work. Then tried metanium and it cleared rash withn 24 hours. would defo recommend it.

When DS had a bad tummy bug & had nappy rash with blisters & broken skin (ouch), our HV recommended Drapolene, and we've used it successfully ever since. It's been around for years apparently...

Good Luck!

Wow thanks for suggestions - the 2 creams you have recommended - can you get them from a normal chemists? In the meantime I will be applying egg white to my baby, how odd! And buying a cheapo fleecey blanket to cut up... Thanks again

I definatly endorse the egg white. It's brilliant. Also a handful or so of oats in the foot of some tights or some such. In the bath as the water is running. Squeeze it out when the bath is run. Pop your baby in the bath for a play. The skin will be soft and luffley!! Also brilliant for mummys skin as well lol.

Also definatly use fleece liners. Buy it in a material shop and cut to size. Voila!!

My ds has just had really bad nappy rash (two inch long open sores!!Poor Love) I left his nappy off all morning and my mum recomended giving him salt baths every night and bathing it in salt water rather than using wipes when changing a nappy. Also used metanium when I put a nappy on.

Worked a treat and took about 4 days to heal.

lins1uk · 21/03/2007 23:30

you could always pay your gp a visit might be able to give you something a little stronger that will help.

BallsOfChocolate · 21/03/2007 23:33

Metanium is magic.

snowleopard · 21/03/2007 23:40

Not so much for open sores, but once they've healed, to prevent nappy rash I've founf plain cornflour works very well - used like powder, just sprinkle everywhere.

colditz · 21/03/2007 23:44

Do take her to the doctor and make sure it isn't thrush, as all the nappy creams in the world will only make it worse if they don't contain an antifungal.

Its going... its not open sores or anything and getting steadily better. She's having as much time with her nappy off as poss, and I got some fleece for liners and good cream and they all seem to be doing the trick Thank you for all the advice, its been a great help also knowing that others have had it as I'm the only one at my postnatal groups and it makes me feel like a bad mother!

So impressed with the wonderful advice. I'm going to keep it to draw on in the future, and for friends. Fab.
