First swimsuit - any recommendations?

I'm looking for a swimsuit for my baby - does anyone have any recommendations for the best shops to try? There seems to be such variation in price!

Also would be interested to know whether you would look for or avoid swimsuits with integrated nappies. They seem much more expensive but is the convenience worth it?

A lot of pools recommend double nappying when swimming, so a disposable swim nappy (we use Huggies i think, heard bad things about many own brand ones) and then a "happy nappy" over the top. I got my DD a happy nappy swimsuit one as I thought it looked cute GrinI ordered it on Amazon but I've seen them in boots too. There are probably much cheaper options but it was recommended by her swimming lesson place.

A lot of swim schools actually insist on a Happy Nappy because it's the most leak-proof swim Nappy on the market.

I got a Happy Nappy wetsuit with an integrated nappy but it's a PITA to take on and off. When DS grows out of it I think I'll just get the Happy Nappy by itself.

If you're using an indoor pool, baby should be fine just in the Happy Nappy, but if you're using an outdoor pool or going to the beach, you might want to also get a swimsuit or wet suit to put over the top. Just make sure the material is thin and stretchy so it's easy to get on and off!

Indoor pool we just used a disposable swim nappy under a Happy Nappy when he was a baby. Now he's 2.5 he has a disposable under Happy Nappy shorts with the integrated nappy legs.

Disposable then happy nappy plus a happy nappy wrap. That's worked for us since he was a few weeks old ( now 16 months old). He doesn't need the wrap for warmth any more but i find it easier to hold on to him so still use it. When abroad/in the garden in the warm weather we use disposable, happy nappy and uv suit.

Ah brilliant, I knew MN would come to the rescue! I had never heard of Happy Nappy before.

Is the sizing quite small as it's so leakproof? My baby is only 7 weeks but she's already 60cm tall and over 5kg so would I be better buying a 3-6 month size and just double nappying to be on the safe side?

It does depend where you're swimming - you want a UV sunsuit if it's an outdoor pool abroad, but a baby wetsuit (to keep the baby warm) if you're going to a local pool in winter. Can't help on sizing, I'm afraid, as I haven't used a Happy Nappy.

DS is in the 98th percentile, I got him weighed recently and he's 8kg at just 3 months! He's wearing the 3-8 month size (medium I think) Happy Nappy wetsuit, and it's pretty snug. They are meant to be snug, of course, but I doubt very much it will fit until he's 8 months!

NameChange30 · 19/06/2017 14:41

PS He was only about 2 months old the first time he wore it, and it definitely wasn't too big.

FruitBadger · 19/06/2017 14:45

They go by weight, but don't buy it with room to grow into, the cuffs round the legs and waist are supposed to be snug so no solids escape!

furryelephant · 19/06/2017 14:53

My DD is 6 months and I got her the 3-8 month size at 4 months. She's around 91st for height and weight but looks long and not very chunky and has lots of room Smile

Squaffle · 19/06/2017 17:25

Definitely go with a Happy Nappy with disposable swim nappy underneath. (We use Asda ones, they're about £2 per pack.) DD has swum every week for over a year and poos EVERY TIME! The Happy Nappy is so good that I don't notice... until the changing room which is a whole different kettle of fish!

dementedpixie · 19/06/2017 17:29

I just used to use a reusable swim nappy and nothing else. Never used a happy nappy

dementedpixie · 19/06/2017 17:29

P.s. mine never ever pooped when we were in the water

peaceloveandbiscuits · 19/06/2017 21:18

DS was 98th centile for weight and 91st for height and went into medium Happy Nappy at 3 months.

Cutesbabasmummy · 20/06/2017 11:44

My DS has been having swimming lessons since 4 months. He was on and still is on 9th centile. We have to use disposable swim nappies and then a happy nappy on top. The brand is called Splash About x
