Can anyone tell me how to make reusable wipes please? What material do I use? I was thinking if there was a way of washing disposible wipes and using them again? but what solution would you put on them? Also someone told me about washing nappy liners and reusing them?

I use small pieces of towelling - you can buy these or justchop up some face cloths or towels. You can use fleece or chopped up muslins either.

I make a solution of chamomile tea, with a couple of drops of lavender and tea tree oil and a tablespoon of olive oil. Put the wipes in a tupperware box, pour over the solution, et voila!

Ikea flannels work well

I use washer, chopped up towels, also use robust super strength jay clothes that I have had for over 2 years - cut into squares and they are still going strong - about to be used on three bums in nappies.

I use either solution:

chamomile tea with a few drops of tea tree /lavender in it.

OR

2 cups boiling water, 2 tablespoons baby wash ( i use a natural organic one so no probs) and a tbsp of olive oil. Mix it together, put wipes in old huggies wipe container and when cool - ready to go.

or just warm water on washer.

I cut Ikea flannels into quarters and hemmed them - so out of a pack of 10 flannels you get 40 wipes! They do need hemming though as they fray very easily. I just chuck them in the wash with the nappies. And I use fleece liners rather than disposable ones, so everything gets washed together.

Using flannels, I just run them under the warm tap before I change ds (no need for wipe-warmers here!!). I tend to use disposable wipes when I'm out as ds doesn't need changing that often and we're not often out! So I haven't bothered making up a wipe mixture.

Old terry squares, teatowels, old t shirts.....anything that has no other us other than poo!

Most of the disposable wipes can be washed too, thicker ones last a few washes, cheap ones not so good.

morningpaper · 21/03/2007 12:28

I just used flannels under the tap

IdrisTheDragon · 21/03/2007 12:30

I use bits of fleece under the tap. And I use fleece liners as well.

LittleB · 21/03/2007 13:06

I use fleece squares and fleece liners, wash it all together. Just buy a big sheet of cheap fleece and cut it to size, doesn't need hemming. Dd's wipes are plain purple, froggy pattern or funky pink flowers - much prettier than plain wipes!
I found solutions like chamomile or tea tree oil made my dd sore, she's got sensitive skin, so I use a little bit of baby lotion, this is easier when you're out too as you can pop clean wipes with clean nappies and a small bottle of lotion, then put used wipe in with used nappy all in wash together.

crimplene · 21/03/2007 18:46

I cut up some white fleece to make both liners and wipes, it looks less pretty that littlebs idea as it gets stained greyish with sudocreme, but you can see if anything is coming out the wrong colour! and I use a bowl of plain water for wiping, or a bottle of water if were out somewhere.

crimplene · 21/03/2007 19:28

I also used to waste my time hanging every wipe out to dry each time I washed them. The fleece ones dry so easily that you only need to leave them in a well-ventilated heap (I use an old cake cooling rack over the stair well) and they're dry in a couple of hours.

staceym11 · 21/03/2007 19:30

i tend to use baby lotion, just by the ease of it, if using for hands etc with dd(2) i tend to run them under tap.

i have some terry towel that were freecycled to me, and some i made myself out of an old duvet cover! doesn't really matter!!

iris66 · 21/03/2007 19:35

cut up/hemmed muslins used here (I worried that fleece wipes wouldn't be wet enough?!) solution of water/chamomile tea bag/few drops of organic baby wash in a small plastic spray bottle (from boots)

nikki81 · 21/03/2007 19:49

Wow thanks for that everyone. I am now searching my house for fleece! Everything that feels like fleece has 100% polyester on the label, is this the same as fleece?

OP posts:
crimplene · 21/03/2007 19:56

Yes, I think it's all polyester. Iris, it doesn't soak up the water so well to begin with, but once it's been used a bit it'll be better.

staceym11 · 21/03/2007 20:04

yeah fleece is polyester, normally made out of recycled carrier bags im full of useless infromation!

nikki81 · 21/03/2007 20:14

Thanks, im going to get cutting! Wipes and liners here we come.

havent tried them as a wipe, but I washed some "bounty" kitchen roll by accident, and it came out the machine whole. Might work?

do you all have to make up a wipes solution every day?

eidsvold · 22/03/2007 10:17

nah I have enough to do a full huggies plastic box and a set of wipes left over. So can last up to a week but I have 2 in nappies and about to have 3 after tomorrow.

mummyhill · 22/03/2007 20:44

I sew fleece and terry back to back for my wipes that way I have something to cover all evetualities. Plain water or cold chamomile tea here as well. I got a cheep fleece throw and made about 10 liners and 20 wipes from it bung it all in the wash together.

accessorizewithbabysick · 22/03/2007 20:48

Ooh, thanks, I must get started, have had wipes for ages (very lazy and bought some...)

sputnik · 23/03/2007 12:59

You can wash ordinary wipes and use them too, so don't throw away the ones you have. They will keep going for several washes.
