Transition from bedside crib to cot?

DS is 20 weeks and I want to start getting him used to sleeping in his cot. We tried putting him up there last week after he fell asleep at 7pm. He was fine but woke up at 9pm, saw he was in a strange room and was inconsolable - it took me ages to calm him.

I've allowed myself to get a bit lazy and he naps on me during the day. Should I be encouraging him to nap in his nursery now?

I'm just not sure how we're ever going to manage him being in a separate room if he cries every time he wakes up and sees we're not next to him

Any advice?

Does he spend any time in his cot awake? I've put DS in his cot in a morning for a while whilst I get ready with his mobile on. We moved him into his room and cot at 4 months, I was worried he'd wake up thinking it was playtime as all he'd done is play in there but he didn't and woke up just the same. Can't get him to nap in the day in there tho.

Another thing I've heard others do is move the cot into your room. Or you could put his current crib inside his cot?

You could bring the cot into your room, in place of the crib, as a transition.

Also, don't put baby into the cot already asleep. Get him to go to sleep in there.

We change ds in his room and often pop him down in his cot for a play. Then when it came to 6 months we started with naps in his room which to start with were hit and miss but because he was use to the room he didn't freak out completely. When we decided to move him overnight I did it on a Friday so it didn't matter so much if he disturbed dh. I had to go in and settle him numerous times that first night but he got there.
