What exactly is a children's commissioner and what are their powers? I phone about a discrimination matter and she asked me to send me the detail which I have and she seemed lovely but do they have authority? Or are they like the citizens advice for children? Could anyone give examples of when they have used one?

My understanding is that there are 4 in the Uk and their role is to promote children's rights and ensure their views are heard.

I'm not sure they get involved in individual cases but rather in a broader sense; national issues affecting children's rights etc.

They protect the rights of children, for example they are involved in leading serious case reviews into child abuse or sexual exploitation, and ensure that children in care are supported. The website here gives some more information.

Ok great thank you. Now have you known anyone personally who has used one? I'm still rather confused to me they then seem like some kind of mp for children that doesn't take up invidual cases. So do they just take referral from social work. I think just recently they can take individual cases if they affect other children, hence her helpfulness. I'm still don't quite understand there purpose, so any examples I would love to hear.
