Long distance parenting

Long story short, I'm going to be starting work in the UAE soon (good job, tax free etc.) which is the opportunity of a lifetime and will really get things back on track for me post-divorce. DD (11) and DS (9) have been aware for months as the process has gone on and we've had really good chats about it. DD in particular has a mature head and sees the long game and the fact that we can buy a house for the 3 of us for when I'm back - which I'm confident will be fairly often.
I'm just looking for ideas and advice to keep things going while I'm away. There's Skype and social media to keep in touch with each other and we're always planning holidays and stuff but are there any other little things we can be doing to keep ourselves in each other's orbits as much as possible over such a distance?

Buy a small diary, just a couple of lines per day and write them a little note every night.
Letters in the post are pretty awesome too.

That's so cool, I hadn't thought of that! Having something through the post is pretty special so I will definitely do that.

I was going to do a little video diary too maybe.

Do they do any activities, football/ballet/school plays? Can you plan to be back for a couple of visits to be part of the audience/on the sideline?

You can get games you can play against each other like phone apps, my DP and I played a quiz game for ages and had heaps of different topics. There was also phases of a word game but that's boring and a simpsons game where you go to each other's worlds and steal coins. We are grown ups it's just fun especially with us working in separate cities.

My wee ones keep in touch with their dad and other relatives over Skype and what's app, just sending heaps of photos of all sorts of things like drawings, pieces of work, them reciting school poems, voice recordings as well as videos! Nothing is off limits even photos of dinner or setting up the FaceTime at the dinner table

But I love the above idea about getting stuff in the post as I just love a parcel!

Box sets as well I do remember when we were in the middle of dexter and he had to travel I would sit in bed and watch one and he would be in his hotel and watch the same episode then we could talk about it after as if we had just watched them together
