Can my prem baby go in a sling?

DD is 8 weeks old, -2+2 weeks corrected still, she's 5lb12 now but still tiny built, 'up to 5lb' clothes are still roomy on her. Is she too small to go in a sling? DS is 2 and a half and I'm desperate to get out of the house with the 2 of them but I've already discovered the pram is a nightmare! Plus people try and touch her when they see how small she is which drives me nuts, so it'd be great if she was a little less accessible to strangers.

For some reason it sits in my head that babies need to be a certain size first. Our sling isn't a fancy wrap one or anything, it's fairly structured in shape (it's a cheap one basically), not sure if the type of sling also makes a difference?

The slings usually come with guidelines for baby sizes - I know I was waiting til my prem baby got to 5lb to use the NcT close caboo and then 7lb for the ergo 360.

I used a close Caboo from birth (6lb something).
Some others have a "newborn insert" required.

I looked into this for a friend. I think you can, but you need the right sling - a stretch wrap, a caboo or a ring sling. This site had some info on one of the FAQs www.littlepossums.co.uk/information/slings-faq.htm .

Caboo carrier. My baby was Prem- 4 pounds 2 at birth (spent 2 weeks in scbu) and stayed tiny for ages. I used the caboo from him being around 3 weeks old I think.

The type of sling makes a difference,e big difference. It would be unlikely a cheap formed one would be safe as your baby would be under the recommended Weight

Can you get some advice from a sling service or sling library near you. Then can see what you have, and maybe lend you a safe one till your baby is bigger

Thanks everyone, I suspected as much. The one we have is left over from my DS so I don't have the packaging to look at minimum weight. There is a sling library but I can't make it there for a few weeks for various reasons but I will hold out and wait until then so that we can get the right fit Smile
