Facial scar on toddler

Just wondering if anyone has experience or advice? Toddler split head open and it's healing but a very definite scar. Has anyone done anything to help/hinder the fading of a scar or had a child with a scar that did/didn't fade? It's a very obvious red mark now (3m on).

Hi OP, not sure if this is ok for a toddler but after I had a surgery I was advised to use bio oil, I didn't but my mum did and her scars are much much less noticeable.
I'm sorry to say my husband has a scar on his forehead from where he split his head open as a toddler.

Sunscreen sunscreen sunscreen

MrsChopper · 01/06/2017 20:29

Woumds/scars still heal for 3 months. It will look red due to the extra blood supply and collagen it is using to heal. It should start fading soon. Not sure if bio oil can be used on the face but some people claim it reduces scar appearances.

Yep my dc had a split head at the age of 2. She's now 5 and there's a faint scar but not too bad actually. I did moisturise it once it had fully healed and it's definitely better but not convinced that what I did made any difference.

Belle1409 · 01/06/2017 20:37

i would try some coconut oil

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 01/06/2017 20:39

Another recommendation for bio oil here. It's made such a difference to my scars.

WarwickDavisAsPlates · 01/06/2017 20:42

I used pure vitamin e oil on a scar that I had on my hand, it was fairly visible even after around 10 years, now you can barely see it all.

I would probably wait a while though if I were you as scars will still be quite red after a few months so it could still go down.

Bio oil helped my little boys mark. But it's still there, shows more in the sun x

The only thing clinically proven to improve scars is silicone. I used kelocote on a facial scar after seeing it mentioned on here and it worked very well. You can get clear patches as well which might work if the gel would get rubbed off. It needs to be on all day, and keep the area out of the sun. Massaging scars also helps to promote blood flow and prevent thickening.

EverythingCounts · 01/06/2017 21:33

Yes, kelocote gel is what you want. Ask your GP to prescribe it as it can be bought but is expensive.

My ds has a scar right in the middle of his forehead, Harry Potter style.

We used silicone gel but I think the cut probably needed stitches and they only glued it at hospital so it was more that it looked a bit separated rather than the scar itself if you see what I mean. We are about four years on now and it has definitely shrunk and faded and isn't terribly noticeable now - their heads grow, which sounds strange but decreases the size of the scar. Still upsets me when I see it though. Sad

HeyMicky · 01/06/2017 21:41

Yes Kelocote. It's available on Amazon.

DD split her head open above the eyebrow last October and the scar is almost invisible now. We used it twice a day for six months.

mikado1 · 01/06/2017 21:57

Oh thanks so much all. So kelocote ok for 22mo? Yes strawberry, that's exactly it, glue did not work.. it's quite hard as well for some reason.. ok great. And am applying sunscreen.

One of my little girls had a very deep cut on her cheek when she was about 1 and you can't even see it now - she's 2.5. I think it was pretty much invisible within 8 months after it happened

mikado1 · 03/06/2017 21:59

Oh that's great. Thanks northend.

Watching with interest. Dd 3 has a little scar on her forehead from when a child at nursery hit her with a rake (by accidebt).

She has such perfect skin and v pale so the scar still stands out and makes me sad.
