question about night changes with washable nappies

My dd is 5 weeks old and I have finally sorted how to use washable nappies on her all weekend without any leaks ? quite proud of myself and there is no going back now (thanks Iris66, the nappies you sold me are great). Just a question: I was told that if a nappy isn't soiled when baby wakes for a feed at night then don't change it and make baby too wakeful. That is all very well for disposables but does it work for the washables too? And when she reaches the blissful stage of sleeping through will the nappies last the night?

Thanks

Hi sound, me again, It depends what kind of nappies you are using?

hana · 18/03/2007 17:20

I woul dstill be changing nappies at 5 weeks through the night. the cloth does get v wet and they do pee quite often.
you will find one that lasts through the night, but I'd wait a bit longer

I tend to change if he wakes to feed (he's 10 months now), because I figure he's taking on extra fluids, and I would be REALLY annoyed if he woke up just for a nappy change, if I could change it when I'm up anyway. WHen he sleeps through, they do last - we use a bamboozle or totsbots original (i.e. non-coloured), sometimes with a booster, and they seem to be fine.

Chilledmama - I have motherease one size, tots bots originals and tots fluffles. Thanks for your replies on the breastfeeding thread!

At this age I'd probably still change as he/she is already awake but later on when/if they start sleeping for longer or thru the night, you just need to make sure you can boost the nappy to last.
MEOS have a snap in booster that works well or you could use a microfibre cloth in between the nappy & the wrap.
tbh every baby is different and you just need to find what will suit your baby

I use Kooshie Ultra but put DS in a disposible overnight . They are lovely nappies but they don't last all night. My riend uses Motherease nappies and her DD1 was a very heavy wetter so she put 2 nappies inside the wrapper and that worked perectly or the overnight sleep. As for changing during the night...again it depends on your DS. If he doesn't seem bothered by the wet nappy then you could leave him or you could try a fleece liner (babykind.co.uk) which draws the miosture away and keeps skin feeling dry.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 18/03/2007 17:34

I never changed overnight if it wasn't dirty - fleece liners make all the difference to keeping them drier. I didn't buy them though - I got DH to make them from a fleece blanket (bought from IKEA for under £2

Flamesparrow · 18/03/2007 20:40

I never change wet nappies overnight. If a cloth nappy is sodden in the morning then it needs an extra booster (either a proper cloth nappy one, or a microfibre cloth from tesco etc) - a well boostered nappy easily lasts a full night

They DO look weeble-like, but they are fine - just a bit odd looking

yomellamoHelly · 18/03/2007 21:26

Don't change ds2's nappy unless it's pooey. Always use a fleece liner or a hemp booster to keep the damp off his skin though. Not seen any difference between the 2 tbh. No problems with nappy rash either. Occasionally leaks (once a week? / every 10 days) usually from a huge poo, but it's never enough to wake him up.

babypowder · 19/03/2007 10:41

I've never changed DD2 (now 12 weeks) during the night unless she's pooed. We use totsbots originals with a fleece wrap and we've only leaked once and no nappy rash.

kittypants · 19/03/2007 10:44

i never changed wee nappy but did poo ones!i put fleece liner and lots of boosting in.big bum ds!

soundbites · 19/03/2007 14:45

Thanks for all your responses. If I were to make my own fleece liners can someone tell me what they look like? Fabric versions of the paper flushable ones? Do you think I could buy the fabric (closest Ikea is not that close!)? I think I might have seen them on the Nappy Lady website so maybe it would be simpler to buy them there.

this

These liners are excellant, and £6 for 20 so cheap I think. I tried making some but they were rubbish! Bamboo nappies are great for night time, I use a boosted clwt twt.

junkinmytrunk · 19/03/2007 18:32

I bought a fleece blanket for £2 from Primark and just cut it into rectangles that would fit into the nappy.

You can shape them but tbh I don't think it makes any difference

soundbites · 19/03/2007 20:30

thanks Poptart - I have ordered the ones you suggested (love the colours!).

Hope you like them I think they are really great, and they soften with washing unlike some fleece that goes harder.

Babylicious · 20/03/2007 20:43

Can I ask a dimbo question? When people talk about "boosting" the nappy whereabouts and what with? I had assumed something inside the nappy but see earlier in the thread boosting between nappy and wrap.

I use bamboozles with totsbots wraps - but might be getting some rikki soon as I dont have enough.

What do you recommend, where?
