My eldest (6.5 yo) must be on a growth spurt and she's constantly hungry. Begging me for snacks between big meals. She is tall and v slim so I think it is genuine. I'm also trying to get her to drink lots as it is warm. A typical meal is
Breakfast- large bowl of porridge or boiled egg with two whole meal toast with butter. Juice
Within an hour- begging me for snacks - offered two crackers and a apple.
More begging on way out- two large rice cakes and a drink of water
Lunch - large ham sandwich, carrots, celery batons, museli bar
Begging for snacks - biscuits
Dinner- large piece of cod, with 8 jersey potato roasted, cucumber
Large bowl plain yogurt and honey
Glass of milk,
An hour later- hungry again- ate large banana.
She's not good with hummus or avocado which fill me up but is generally open to most things. Aware I need to replace biscuits with something

Maybe add beans and fried mushrooms to her eggs and toast with breakfast? What does she ask for? Tbh a lot of her diet sounds like mine when I was actively trying to lose weight, carrot batons, rice cakes, fish and cucumber etc. Maybe a slice of bread with peanut butter as a snack? Are the milk and yogurt full fat?

You need to ditch the rice cakes, no nutritional value there. Also look at the musli bars, majority of them aren't very nutritious either.
Looking at what your DD eats does look a bit like what a sedentary adult should be eating, I think you need to get a bit more fat in there; nuts, peanut butter spread on apples, cheese, milk.
Swap the biscuits for flapjacks, or dried fruit, or a small bowl of cereal.
Try and get here to eat more carbs, she needs fuel.

More carbs needed, definitely. Rice cakes are useless for growing children, slices of granary bread (toast?) would be better, or some nuts. What about cubes of cheese as a snack alongside the fruit and veg? Agree with a PP that this looks a bit like 'diet' food...

Lobsterquadrille2 · 01/06/2017 16:07

Oatcakes with peanut butter, cubes of cheese, eggs boiled in advance and kept in the fridge, slices of deli chicken. More fat and protein and less empty carbs like biscuits (I know you mentioned those) and rice cakes.

Yes all milk/ cheese full fat. Some great ideas here

You could also try adding thi gs like carrot and swede mashed up with butter to her tea. Boiled eggs are great too, when my sister's kids got to around 11/12 she used to boil a dozen at once and put them back in the box in the fridge to snack on.

Second the suggestions of nuts/nut butters. Toast with peanut butter topped with banana for brek. Greek yoghurt with nutty muesli/granola.

Also pulses+additional protein combos for lunch or evening meal e.g. chilli con carne, white bean & chorizo stew, sausage & lentil casserole etc. Pasta and couscous as sides (wholemeal if you like) rather than rice or potatoes, more filling & slower energy release.

She really struggles with beans and picks them out of chilli etc which is a bit of a nightmare. We had pizza tonight as we had a play date - she ate loads, then two v large pieces of chocolate cake as it was a birthday, lots to drink, then asked for another snack as soon as people were gone. I gave her the biggest banana and she asked for another after. She's ravenous

Ah that's a shame about the beans, maybe she will grow to appreciate them eventually...

It does sound like she's eating foods too low in calories. Some ideas:

Peanut butter on wholemeal toast
Flapjacks
Wholemeal banana pancakes
Banana and fruit oaty muffins
Cheese and crackers
Coconut milk and blended berry lollies
Cheese and veg egg muffins
Avocardo chocolate mousse or avo cake
wholemeal pitta and hummus (could you try red pepper hummus)
Nuts and seeds
Veg and pesto pinwheels
Chicken and veg kebab (fun to make, bake and keep in fridge)
I give my lo splashes of cream too on fruit salads, or in his dinners to up the calories

Hth xx

Nuts, cheese, dried/fresh fruit - my go to snacks for DD who has hollow legs

Avocado good too. Oatcakes with cream cheese

Southeastlondonmum · 03/06/2017 19:43

Thanks for these ideas. I'm allergic to nuts so don't have them in house for obvious reasons..I accept they are great for protein / filling up though.
Today she had...
Large breakfast, snack after swimming, made flapjacks after swimming with oats, dates, apricots) she ate three large pieces of flapjack ), for lunch she had half a full size baguette filled with cheese and ham ( so about a foot!), cucumber, biscuits, apple. Announced she was hungry 20 mins later, offered a banana. Two huge ( adult sized plates) of pasta with veg, pesto, cheese and prawns with full fat yogurt mixed in for extra calories, large ice cream, glass of milk. Announced she was still hungry immediately afterwards, offered banana. Lots of fluids through out day. Is this really normal? She has eaten more than me and she's six..,
