Perfect Prep machine, worth it?

Been thinking about getting a perfect prep machine for DC3 due in Oct. Read some rather scary things about mould a while back but from what I've read as long as you clean it properly and use the branded filters it's fine. Anyway my question is, is it any different from making bottles up by using a shot of hot water then topping up with boiled and cooled water? I'm on a very tight budget but will be happy to buy it if it's worth it.

In theory it should be perfect.
The water must be 70 degrees Celsius to kill bacteria in powder. That's the hot shot. Then it adds filtered cool water to get to the right temp.
I got one and I loved it but I won't use it for the next baby because of the hygiene stories.
So instead I got a kettle with a 70 degrees button on it and I will use that for my own hot shot and top up with filtered water or bottled water.

Ok thanks everyone, got a lot of positive responses, just what I was hoping for! melinda is that method safe? How long does boiled water stay sterile once refrigerated? Never thought of doing it this way before I read how the perfect prep worked.

melinda's method is not recommended. The water needs to sterilise the powder so it must be 70 degrees hitting the powder.

I had one, and I recently had a discussion with my husband about whether we'd buy another if we had another child. We definitely would, even if we had to sell the telly!

It's just as quick to boil the kettle on the morning, fill a jug and keep it in the fridge. Freshly boil water as needed pour half, mix formula in, add fridge water and shake.
The water hitting the formula is freshly boiled in melindas method.

Just FYI: They're half price with extras on Babies R us at the moment, and I think they were in Mothercare.

It's still not right though as actual boiling water kills nutrients. It needs to be 70 degrees not 100.
The complexity of achieving this is why the perfect prep machine exists. Or a kettle like mine with a 70 degree button.

Seriously best thing I've bought for my 4 month old, wouldn't be without it, if you are doing your own hot shot and cool water you might still make it too hot and have to wait for it to cool, I love that our bottles are always perfect, means my girl doesn't have to get distressed waiting

There are always loads for sale on sites and some really rate them. I only used cooled boiling water made up ever 12 hours ( longest I did) and it was fine. I was out a lot during day so the perfect prep wouldn't have been great for me anyway

Unexpectedbaby · 29/05/2017 21:11

We didn't have our for the first 3 weeks. Wish I had it straight away. Makes life so much easier! Still now at 5.5 months I wouldn't be without it.

We have a kettle that boils to 70degrees but then the water isn't sterile. The water in he prep machine is 70 degrees to kill the bacteria in the formula but is also filtered. Just boiling to 70 degrees wouldn't have the same effect.

I had one for DC2 and absolutely loved it. perfectly safe to use.

Eveninties · 29/05/2017 21:24

Ok I'm convinced- definitely going to get one. Thanks! Off to check out prices.

I just wanted to add i wouldnt be without mine haf no problems , thr problems they had few months ago was due to carbon not mould as long as u check them regularly its fine defiantly recommend one

switswoo81 · 30/05/2017 22:50

My dd is two now so this is stored for future dc ( hopefully) . Honestly my best baby buy. After a few weeks we moved it upstairs and created a feeding place on the chest of drawers . Much way to run upstairs during the day than come down during the night.

Youvegotafriendinme · 30/05/2017 22:56

I love mine. I got it on offer for around £50 in mothercare but would have paid the £120. It's brilliant any time of day. Easy to clean and we have taken it with us for a weekend away. I don't know anyone that got rid as soon as they got it. And the mould is due to people not cleaning them. If they weren't safe they wouldn't allowed to still be on sale
