What to dress my baby in? Dozy 1st time mum..

I post this thread at the risk of sounding like a complete dozy moron...

I have, until now, dressed my baby in vest and sleepsuit. If we go out, I either put a snowsuit /coat + trousers + booties on over the top (for a sling), or used lots of blankets and a hat, mitts and booties (in the car / to someones house).

I have now got lots of clothes for him that I want to start putting him in - just tops and trousers. So, if I want to put him in these to go out (to a friends house or a mums and baby group), do I put them on over the vest or over the sleepsuit. It seems to me that he would get too cold in just vest and tops + trousers + boots as compared to vest and sleepsuit.

Please advise, I have no idea at all!!!

put them on over the vest, and yr not stupid, I was exactly the same .

I think that after babies are 6 weeks or so (?) they can regulate their own temperature as we can, so you can dress them in the same number of layers as you are wearing.

I always thought little babes would be slightly cooler as they are fairly imobile, so usually dressed mine in a vest plus whatever I was wearing, until they were crawling.

You're not silly, I stil get in a pickle about whether they are too hot/cold, especially at night.

fryalot · 17/03/2007 09:50

Dress them as you dress yourself - if you feel cold, chances are they will too and will need an extra layer.

If you put your hand down their vest and feel their back or their chest it should feel the same as your hand. If it feels cool, add a layer. If it feels warm, take a layer off.

You're not daft, everyone worries about this. I worried about it with ds as he's a boy and my previous two were girls! (?)

agree with the others - at that age - and my 6month old still does - wear popper vest, top , tights and a bottom. A jacket and hat when we're out with blanket. I've stopped using a snowsuit as it was too warm

CricketSoph · 17/03/2007 09:51

Maybe add a cardigan if you feel baby is too cold? To go to mums/babies group I put DD in trousers, vest, long-sleeved t-shirt, socks, thick cardigan. Both my car seat and pushchair have cosytoes too. Most of the time when we get where we're going the cardigan comes off because its plenty warm enough indoors.

not a silly question btw - at least not compared to mine before DD was born - I had no idea that the things with short sleeves that popper under the nappy are called vests. To me "vests" have no sleeves and no poppers....

NineUnlikelyTales · 17/03/2007 09:52

Not silly at all. I agree with what the others have said and if you are ever in doubt, feel his chest rather than his hands/feet (my DS are always cold, even if he is too warm).

Thanks everyone!

I will try an outfit today (so exciting!). He is finally in 0-3 month stuff (8 weeks today), and I feel more confident about getting the tops over his head.

I like the idea of putting a cardigan over the top. Can't believe I didn't think of that, seeing as I LIVE in cardigans!!

and rabster, remember... you're NOT going to break his arms by putting them in sleeves.

NineUnlikelyTales · 17/03/2007 10:13

Aw, it is exciting when you put on those first outfits. Make sure you get a photo!

colditz · 17/03/2007 10:18

Remember on the days you don't feel like dressing him, a babygrow and cardigan is fine.

rabster · 17/03/2007 11:30

NineUnlkelyTales - getting a photo was the first thing I did!

when dd1 was little, I had a photo of her in EVERY SINGLE OUTFIT. Sometimes, if I changed her skirt, but not her top, I had to take another photo, because she may look better with that particular skirt/top combo.

midnightexpress · 17/03/2007 12:28

If you think he's going to be too cold, you could always use (ahem) tights. We put ds1 & 2 in them under their outfits in chilly weather when v small. They'll never remember! I'm always surprised that all the socks seem to be short for babies - I'd think there would be a market for long socks for wee boys?

And as the others say, don't worry about being a moron - I got funny looks from other mums for putting ds1 in trousers over a sleepsuit, and only started with the tights because a pal with 2 dds suggested it.

colditz · 17/03/2007 14:08

I used tights with ds1 and use them with ds2. they are fantastic. Get plain white, grey or black ones, and they just look like socks, and they DON't fall off!

catASTROPHE · 17/03/2007 22:32

also, Vertbaudet do a cheapish 3 pack of long knee high socks in 'boys' colours.
