Did any of you use cloth from day 1?

I´m in spain so we have to expect to be in hospital at least 3 days here. I´ve bought a packet of disposables to use while there (not the eco ones I´m afraid, I don´t think they exist here yet, at least not where I live) because I can´t see it being practical to have 3 days worth of real nappies OR sending dh off every day to clean a load. On the whole it seems like the most practical decision but I can´t help but feel it´s a shame I can´t put his brand new little bottom straight into a soft and cosy real nappy...
Did any of you take real nappies to the hospital or did you use disposables for the first couple of days?

Haven't read the whole thread so sorry if I'm repeating. I took disposables into hospital too, for the same reasons you have mentioned. Thought I might have bigger things to worry about after giving birth!

Went home the next day and used the local nappy laundry service for the first six months and then bought my own.

It is a shame that our local hospital don't give more support for cloth nappy users but there again, they were fab on the breastfeeding front so I suppose you can't have everything.

We were planning to use cloth from the start and DS's first nappy was a lovely soft cloth one, but I had a PPH at home and had to go into hospital for 5 days - so had to switch to disposables. The main thing to avoid is having to buy the things in the hospital shop - they cost over £5 for a small packet. They leaked, and were nasty and plasticky. Because I had such a miserable time in hospital, the feel of a disposable and especially the smell of baby wipes brings it all back now makes me feel a bit queasy - but they were the only practical solution at the time.

I did use disposables in the beginning but i have to say that dd's meconium wasnt really all that bad-she passed most of it before we even had a chance to get a nappy on her after the birth and did the rest of it on her vest the next day-it washed out of the vest fine so i cant see why it wouldnt wash out of nappies. My next baby will be in cloth from day one

we used cloth from nappy one and I was in for 8 days and yes meconium does wash out easy as- I found a nappy wraped up in the back of the locker when I packed to go home and the black ick was wrapped inside it-- took it home rinsed it through then washed it and it came up clean no problem.
Don't be scared of using in hospital but if it really is not an option or will cause more hassle than you can deal with then don't feel ba for not doing it.

the last thing I wanted to do after going birth was worry about washing dirty nappies.

We used disposibles for 2 or 3 weeks after giving birth.

From day 4 - when we were home from hospital.

In defence of the disposible for a newborn I have one word

Merconium

That stuff is like tar.

i used my fluffles from day one with dd, but i had a home birth and didn't really have much choice in the matter after harassing all my friends into using washables- they would have been if i'd put her in a disposable!!!

Washersaurus · 21/04/2007 11:52

I used mine from about day 4 when we got home from hospital. If I had realised how easy it would have been to do it from day 1 though I would have done....and will be doing with DC2 hopefully!

I used disposables in hospital cos i didnt know how long i was going to stay in and couldnt expect dp to tackle reusables just yet! i couldnt wait to get home and use my tots bots, terries, muslins, popolinos,.... lol!
as soon as i walked through the door after 4 days in hospital i put a muslin and soft fleecy wrap on and loved it!
