I am looking to get my kids in swimming lessons, how long did it take your little ones to swim? Did it help?

My children are 5 and 6 and have had swimming lessons for about a year, my older daughter has decided to give up as she likes swimming, but doesn't enjoy the lessons. They have quite a few children in the class and I worked out she swam for about 5 mins in a 30 mins session. Based on this, and the fact she can be safe in the water (albeit is no expert) I agreed she can stop. I've committed to taking her swimming myself once a week and I can see a huge improvement in her. My 5 year old enjoyes the lesson and so I've kept her in lessons, but changed teacher. She was diving in in the last session so i can see she is going to be more confident than my oldest. I just want them to be safe in the pool whilst on holiday really, so making sure they can swim he four strokes, get themselves to the side and climb out and that they know to turn onto their backs a float etc etc. My friends did the block session in the last half term with her 5 year old and she is pretty much a free swimmer now so swore by it x

That's my main priority, knowing they will be safe. All be it they are never left alone etc in the pool and we're always in with them just want them to be able to swim a bit with confidence and safely. Last 2 holidays I had my youngest cling on to me a lot.

My dc started swmming lessons at 3.3 and were swimming unaided at 3.8. They're 4.8 now and can swim freestyle quite well for 10m.

Both boys had lessons from about 18 mths. In the early years I went in with them. It was structured play for them. It became a social group for me also. By 5 ds 1 could easily swim 20mtrs. He's now 13 , still has lessons and his warm up is 200mtrs!!! He does swimming for all round fitness.
Ds 2 now 11 can swim 200mtrs but not very strongly. This is mainly because he had set backs when he had his heart operations and he is also austic. This is his main form of fitness, so will go for years hopefully ( he's not allowed to do contact sports because of his pacemaker). The lessons are structured and he thrives in this kind of environment
